30 amp Plug at Home?

First let me say that I have a 30 amp Crusader Lite 5th wheel. I had a licensed electrician run a 100 amp cable underground from the house circuit breaker box to the shed that the 5th wheel is kept in. I had a 50 amp receptible installed and I use a "Y" adapter that plugs into the 50 amp and has two 30 amp receptible that I can plug the electrical cables from my trailer into. I have two 15K air conditioners, one factory installed, the other I installed on a dedicated circuit. I know about hot & high humidity living here in Southwest Louisiana. I can turn both AC's on and within 1 hour, it is comfortable inside the 5th wheel. My cost for running the cable underground for a distance of 120 feet was $1400, which I consider well worth the cost over being hot and uncomfortable. I can now use the 5th wheel as a guess bedroom.

I installed a 30A circuit/outside garage plug about 10 years ago when we got TT #3. Loved having the ability to run everything while the TT was parked next to the garage (used the garage panel to connect to power). Now we're on TT #4, and it could use a 50A circuit. I may eventually run that, too; but I can still use the 30A circuit for all but the second A/C, which isn't too bad. For now, it works. As for cost, it's too long ago for me to remember it, but I believe you'll pay any electrician several hundred dollars in labor alone unless the going rate in your area is a lot less than in ours. If you can safely do it yourself, you'll save a lot of money. Good luck!

You should be good with that wire and 30 Amp RV Plug box. Be sure you have a free 30A 110V breaker in the box to connect to. 30A 120V not a 30A 220V breaker.
Your 30A RV Plug and box should have a wiring diagram to double check your wiring against.

Ask price before giving the go-ahead. I’ve had two installed at different houses. The first was right at the meter. I paid him $400. (That’s how I know to ask price first.) The second one was at my home and took about 90’ of 6 gauge wire, he had to crawl under my house, dig a trench, run the wire in conduit. He provided 3 sets of breakers, a junction box, an outdoor breaker and the 30 amp plug in a box plus all the wire nuts. All for $400. Not the same electrician. Oh, he also came back just to check on things after it was all said and done. I’m pretty happy with what I have at my home.

I added a 30-amp outlet a few years ago. I installed the outlet myself and pulled the Romex to the breaker panel, then hired an electrician to make the connection to a 30-amp breaker. He also checked out my work before making the connection. I don't recall the cost, but it wasn't exorbitant.

Finally got tired of using a 15 amp receptacle, turns out the back fo the RV is next to the main power panel in my basement. Bought a replacement 30 amp Camco female receptacle, 20 feet of #8/3 SOOW cable, drilled into siding and added a new 30 amp breaker. The Camco female is free in my shrubs and connects to my 50 to 30 dogbone.

Total cost maybe $50.

At the very least I will have a 30 amp 20 foot extension when I am done.

I put a 30amp plug in garage and run the umbilical under the garage door, (there is a cutout that just clears the cable so no pressure or smashed line). I have conduit left over from some other projects so I piped across the garage and into the breaker panel box, installed my new 30A 120V breaker, pulled THHN 10 Gauge cables and tied it all together. Running great ever since. Running Romex along the surface exposed isn't allowed... hidden in the wall is, go figure! So conduit it was. I used Rigid Electrical PVC because it's what I already had.

Nice! You done it really right. Put in a sewer plug or just get it near the street drain and cousin Eddie will be there in time for the Holidays!

I have a sewer clean out nearby but it's uphill so I need to use a macerator pump which I still plan on getting one of these days.

We put a 15 ,30 and 50 amp system in on the front of the garage. Just ask the electrician if they know what a rv plug is. We had 100 amp service to the external garage

Yet more proof that I married well. DH is a retired master electrician still doing a bit of work as a hobby. He installed our rv plug-in years ago behind his shop using leftover bits and pieces. Moho’s plugged in all summer ready to go at a moment’s notice. Total cost was zip.

Been there, done that. If you're having an electrician do the work make darn sure you tell him you want a NEMA 30TT receptacle installed. The receptacle will say 125V - 30A MAX right on the face of it. If he says he'll fix you up with an adapter, find another electrician.

The install can’t be very much more than what it would cost for a spa.... depending on the length of the run. If I was going for a RV hookup, I would go for the maximum amps. You can always step down....

Installing a NEMA 30TT is about as simple a wiring job as you'll ever see, as easy as installing a standard 15A duplex. Even if you did not already know how receptacles are wired, the instructions that come with it are more than adequate. If you don't know your way around the inside of the panel, you probably need to find someone who does or hire and electrician for that end, as suggested by RVBuff in Post #25 above. Electrician prices vary up to 350% or more for the same work, so get quotes and ask questions if you are not up to it yourself.

I installed a 30TT next to my outdoor panel the day after my 5er arrived. Could not live without it. Full hookup waited until I had the driveway redone in pavers with parking apron for the RV. I did all the electrial (one 30 and two 20 amp circuits) and the potable water. I did not want to crap around with installing a drain to my septic tank, so I hired a plumber with all the right trenching equipment and septic tank experience.

It depends on your panel and how far away it is. If your panel is full you will need a sub panel and a few breakers to make room. That case could be $400-$500. If you are close and have an open spot in your panel it should be under $200. If you are going to spend the $$ you would be wise to install 50 amp vs. 30 amp. Not much cost difference and you never know what you may need in the future.

We had an electrician install 30 amp for $200. He did not dig a trench, installed next to the box. Works great!

We decided to install central A/C at our home in Southern California a few years ago, about the same time we bought our Cardinal 3250 fifth-wheel. We have always kept our RV's behind the gate in our driveway that leads from the street to the separate garage. We decided to have the electrical contractor also install a 50-amp outlet nearest the driveway where we park the RV. This allows us to utilize the RV as a "guest house" when we have family or friends visit. It was not inexpensive, but for us it was worth every penny.
