5th wheel towing issue/questions

So I am new to a fifth wheel this year. My TV is. 17 F350 srw. Trailer is a Sierra 372lok. I have a Reese Sidewinder for my short bed with a Reese Elite hitch. When I tow and it is under 8-10mpg winds everything goes like a dream. I tow 65-70mph but can go 75 or 80 and no issues( I don’t but have tested). When there is 15-25mph winds it sucks to tow. It wags the trailer a lot, and if not that give the truck a shimmy. Pulling at 65 is a chore.

Is this normal? Trailer tires replacement with stiffer sidewalls help?

When DRW is an option how much difference does it make?

Thanks for help.

SRW TV is not ideal...DRW will stabilize towing instrumentally...been there done that...

You can stabilize the trailer axles and tires/wheels as well but considerably more work and expense...done both on mine...stops all the tail wagging the dog...

I pulled a Columbus 320RS for almost six years with an F250 (single rear wheels of course) and never really had the "wag" you're talking about. We upgraded to a 2017 F350 SRW and it pulled it fine too, but then we got a new trailer that was a bit heavier and right at the top of the SRW tow limit. Then...we had some wag.

A month or so later we purchased an F350 DRW and you can honestly almost forget you're pulling 16,000+ pounds behind us. The stability of six tires vs. four is amazing. And we put Goodyear Endurance on our trailer and those tires are a dream.

Stiffer sidewall tires on the 5er make a big difference also. The new GY Endurance tires are certainly much stiffer than any other ones on the market today.

Where is your pin located in reference to the rear axle of the truck? It must be ahead of the rear axle. Also, do you know how much your pin weight is on the truck? If not how much squat do you have in the rear wheel wells when the trailer is hitched? Also check air pressure all way around truck and trailer. Is your trailer close to level?

Factory prep for the pin. I weight 14700 ish for the trip. I have 21ish% pin weight. I haven’t done anything so no airbags but sit level.

Yes Sir, especially if it is in a gust of wind and also when you go behind an Eighteen Wheeler on the Interstate and they block the wind off you and then you pass them or they pass you and the wind hits you broadside again...

I smell what your steppin' in.....

80 psi on trailer and truck set to 60 front and 80 rear. In the rain the truck got to 84 rear but when I got further south they got up to 88!

I understand a DRW would be better and kick my self for not think of it when I traded my 2015 in ( had issue with that too.). What I do y understand is how everyone says they do it so good with a SRW and similar trailer.

Does a DRW fix most of that or do I need trailer suspension you grades and truck to the truck?

And how do people claim to it have issue but I do... lol

Couple more things that can cause trailer sway are the make and model of the tires on the truck and trailer, some truck tires have softer sidewalls, like the Wrangler Duratrac, and suck for towing. Another thing to check is for uneven wear on the trailer tires which could indicate improper axle alignment and make sure the trailer is more or less level front to back.

Pulled a 19,000lb 5th wheel for 20,000+ miles with a RAM 3500 LB CC Dually with zero issues. Used an Andersen hitch.

Michelin on truck and trailer tires seem evenly worn. Trailer is within an inch and truck is level.

Agreed. I went from LR D to LR E and the 5er became more stable.

I have E on there now so I assume I need to go to G if I so, also see someone said about suspension on trailer, I just don’t want to put a bunch on money at it and then need drw but it doesn’t make sense to me.

Pulling 14,200 5er 43' long with a 2016 F350 SRW. Usual speed is 65 with 70 occasionally. Michelins on the truck and Sailun 235/85/16 G rated on the trailer. Truck 70 front/80 rear and 5er 100psi. Just home from the mountains and not a problem, never anything on the flat either. Over 10,000 pulling miles and never experienced anything like you are.

DRW vs SRW

We started out with SRW, felt like the camper was driving the truck at times, went to DRW and now the Beast Tamer is in control. You will love DRW.
Even tried Air Bags and extra springs on the SRW, did not help much, a little but not near enough to be anything like DRW.
Also look into a trailair pin box with air shock. It is wonderful to stop chucking.
