I personally think thats too much trailer for the truck. It'll pull the weight no problem, however you'll easily max out your trucks cargo capacity which sits at 1550lbs for a 4x4.

The 28SGS has a hitch weight of 1410lbs dry. Once you're loaded up , you'll be over your Max weight allowed.

In my opinion... At the campground that i stayed at in St. Augustine beach Florida.. there were a LOT of Canadians that were towing BIG TT's and 5th wheels.. and they seemed ok with what they had .. A F 150..

Newbie - Need help with Towing Recommendation

We will be purchasing a 28SGS 5er and a new truck. Seriously looking at the following truck and need to know if it can pull the 28SGS. The 28SGS is touted as "1/2 ton towable" but we want to be sure before purchasing this truck: Dodge Ram 1500 ST, Quad Cab, 4x4 with 6'4" bed and 5.7-Liter V8 HEMI MDS VVT engine. The Truck's GVWR is 6,700. The truck's 'Payload Capacity' is 1487. Dodge says 'Towing Capacity Max' is 10,050. We plan on putting air bags, etc., on the truck. The Trailer is 'ship weight' of 7,574. Carrying capacity is 2,426, Hitch capacity is 1,410#. Help?

Remember it is not so much what the truck can tow; but what it can carry that drives these decisions.

While most 1/2 ton tow-ables can be towed safely by a 1/2 ton class pickup, the numbers are run with the camper's "brochure weight" and the truck at it's curb weight.

To refresh:
Camper:
Brochure weight: designed weight with NO options or your gear.
Unloaded Vehicle Weight: Off the yellow sticker on the camper (the "as built" weight with factory installed options.
Max trailer weight: Normally what the camper frame can safely support without useful life shortening.

Truck:
Curb Weight: The model weight with a full tank of gas and a 150 pound driver (NO factory or dealer installed options not included in the model).

Safe towing range:
Travel Trailer - 10 - 15% of actual camper weight on the tongue
5th wheel pin weight: 15 - 25% of actual camper weight on the pin.

New Page 1

This camper loaded for camping could weigh as much as 10,000 pounds.
A safe range for pin weigh can vary from 1500 pounds to 2500 pounds depending on how you load it.

Does your 1/2 ton have the available payload after you add the hitch, truck gear, and family to carry the required pin?

I would have to say no on the 1500 with a 5er over 8000 gvrw. That puts pinvsomewhere in load 1400 range while loaded @ min safe pin. So the 5th would need to be less than 6000 dry to allow for 800-1000lbs loading for safe margins and payload for occupants and accessories in truck. Just my $.02 though

There are similar sized fifth wheels with much lighter pin weights, notably the rear kitchen models, and some are down near 1000 lbs. That would be much more suitable for that Ram 1500.
A properly equipped F150 can handle a lot more.
Does anyone know the maximum a Dodge 1500 can carry if fully eqipped?

Not so much fully equipped; but PROPERLY equipped for towing.
Two different beasts. Some extra expense mag wheels REDUCE towing capacity for example.

nope!!

the max payload for the empty Dodge is 1487lbs. and the fictional "dry" pin weight of the trailer is 1410lbs.
with people and cargo and hitch, you'll have to lower that payload number and the trailer's actual pin weight will be way more than the dry pin weight.

Towed the camper in our signature with a '05 Ram 5.7 QC SB RWD. Our pin weight then was 1240 lbs which put the truck over it's GVWR and just under it's RAWR. The camper you're looking at will have a pin weight more in the 1600 to 1700 lb range...well over the trucks RAWR for sure.

If you're determined to stick with a half ton, look at the new F150's with the max tow and payload options. It would handle that fiver you're looking at.

A Ram 1500 Tradesman HD with Reg cab, 2wd, 4.10 gears and longbox can tow 11,500lbs max, 3,125lb payload, and has a GCWR of 17,500

A Ram 1500 Big Horn QCSB with tow pacakge, 3.92 gears and 2wd can tow 10,250 max with 1,611lbs payload and a GCWR of 15,500lbs (200 lbs less for 4wd)

Or a Tradesman HD Reg Cab Ram (if you want to stay Chrysler) if you just want a TV and don't need more than 2 people.

Saw this on another thread today posted by MilCop4523. I'm sure there are FR parts in there somewhere.

Might work on an F-150 6.2L or EcoBoost....

150 towing

If you are happy with your current trailer, I have two suggestions, first do you have light truck or passenger rated tires? LT tires have much stronger / stiffer side walls and help with sway and control. Second, I am pulling a Rockwood 2703SS and experience sway. I purchased a Hensley Hitch, absoloutly amazing!

I currently tow a GREY WOLF 26RL w/RAM 1500. Max, as stated for my truck is 7400 as equipped. I have weighed my trailer and I am quite a bit under weight BUT, I borrowed a friends 2500 RAM one day and it is WAY BETTER at handling the weight. Easier and better handling, truck sits better and more level w/same WDH at same truck hitch height. Mine is OK but I will be looking to upgrade 250/2500 series truck in the future. Just safer to have something which is not near or at max limit. Also easier on the vehicle.

Hensley Arrow. If you want to see mine, I live near Alliance, be happy to tell and show you all about it. PM if interested.

Well, I towed the Salem hemishpere fifth Wheel once with the F-150, and found a deal on a Ram 2500 with the 5.7 HEMI, so I upgraded. It wasnt that the F-150 did a poor job, but I didnt feel safe doing it after all of the feedback I recieved!
