backing up a 5th wheel

We will soon be upgrading from a 30' Heartland toy hauler to a Riverstone 42 FSKG. This is a 45', triple axle 5th wheel. I have never drove a 5th wheel, so I have a couple basic questions you all might be able to comment on.
Not worried too much about pulling just about backing into a site.
No 1--when going down the lane to get to your site, do you hug the shoulder on the site side OR do you stay in the middle?
No 2--How far past the site do go before you stop and start backing into the site?

Thank for the help.

Practice time in a vacant parking lot will be needed. Don't practice at the campground.

You do it just like a bumper pull except you’re going to change when you start your turn slightly.
If you can back in a 30’ bumper pull, you will be fine.

When I updated from a 28’ TT to a 36’ 5th wheel I made 2 practice backups at the dealership to get a feel for it. My only issue is staying in the initial turn for too long before following the camper. I hope that makes sense.

With a good spotter backing is not so tough. In a tough spot I start the truck in then the DW takes over. I tell her what to do.

We are typically sort of in the middle of the roadway to start. The rv Approximately 8’ beyond the parking spot!

What scares the willies out of me is slow speed right turns in crowded areas. You got to go wide, wide, wide. Using the mirrors on the right side is hard.

Practice.

Just remember tail swing. Long trailers cheat more going forward but give more response time when backing. Make sure you have bed clearance when you’re on a twisty spot or a short vertical curve.
