Fifth wheel towing capacity

Need help please! I am looking at going from TT to 5er but I'm totally confused on weights. I have read for days, have downloaded apps, run the numbers, etc, and still not sure. So here's the deal: I have a 2006 Dodge 2500 Mega Cab diesel. I'm looking at a 34 ft 5er toy hauler, 10680 dry weight, 2400 lb pin weight. Will my truck handle this unit? Surely someone on here is pulling a 5er with a Mega Cab?? What are your configurations? What weights are you towing with your 3/4 ton? Thanks in advance!

What does your truck's payload sticker say?

A quick Google search says no. The max towing capacity is only 8150 lbs and the max payload (total weight added, to include passengers, equipment, fuel, pin weight, etc.) is 2222 lbs.

It would help folks here to help you if you post your weight ratings that are on the door jam sticker.
Properly equipped dependant on options (diesel, axle ratio, transmission, ect.) it's possible to tow up to Max GCWR 23,000#s with a Max towing capacity 15,900#s. Again, depending on your truck's build sheet it may be lower.

There's no payload info on the truck. GVW is 9k. Interweb search says GCVW is 20k-23k. Agree with payload around 2200. Max trailer capacity 12900. I think no as well but I'd like yo know how close I am....and why do I see folks towing 40 footers with 3/4 ton!?

If you have a GVWR of 9K on a mega cab diesel, I'd be shocked if you have a payload of much more than 1500. Most 10K GVWR 3/4 ton diesel trucks won't have more than 2500 payload. You should have a sticker on the door jamb that clearly states your payload on a 2006, I would think.

You can't go by what you read on the 'net or what someone else does.
You have to know what YOUR truck is capable of.

I'm just thinking out loud here but if you have no payload or weight ratings stickers on the door jam, was the truck wrecked or 'R' titled or something? I'd have even more concern then if it is.

IMO, take the truck to a truck stop and weigh it with you, the family, the pets, and what you think you would typically put into the truck bed. 9,000 - <that number> = <your payload>.

And people with 3/4 ton trucks pulling large fifth wheels are typically over on the truck's GVWR. They typically ignore that number and stay at or under the axle weight rating (GAWR) and the tire load capacity.

Or, they just ignore the numbers. I had friends who fulltimed with a 40' mid-bunk trailer and a Mega Cab about the year of yours. They said they were 1,000 lbs. over (I never asked which rating- but I know they exceeded GVWR and likely even GAWR).

It's my understanding that 2006 was right about the time they started being required to add Tire & Loading Capacity stickers. It's hit or miss if they're on vehicles of that year and before.

I am towing about the same weight but I do not haul toys, may add some extra weight. I have a 2005 and have no problems at all. Towed from KY to Yellowstone without any problems but I do wish I had an exhaust brake. Oh and mine is a regular 4 door cab, some short bed Mega cabs had problems with fifth wheels.

Weird thing about the Dodge Rams - up until 2013, the Mega Cabs had anemic numbers for payload capacity vs. the equivalent Crew Cab. In some 2012 trucks I saw, the Crew Cab would have close to 4,000 lbs. of cargo carrying capacity where the Mega Cab had 2,500 or less!

You should have these similar stickers near your driver's door jam...post them if you have.

Truck not wrecked or salvaged. I'm the original owner. Door sticker lists GVWR only, and that's 9k. I have no similar tire and loading sticker.
So, fonzie, your payload is 2454 lbs?

10-4. Daimler Chrysler must have opted out of applying the load stickers in 06.

Truck payloads vary considerably. GVWR is a "paper" weight assigned by the manufacturer that is used for tax/licensing/registration. Find your axle ratings and that is really the max you can haul.

Forget dry weight and (dry) pin weight published by manufacturers, what you need to know is the GVWR of your fiver. It is usually the sum of the axle ratings plus the 15% to 25% that will be carried by your truck (pin weight). Does your truck have enough payload (after passengers, tools, hitch, etc) to carry the fiver without exceeding the axle ratings?

The lighter the percentage that is pin weight, the more unstable the trailer will be.

You need to take the truck to get weighed.

GVWR of the 5er I'm looking at is 16k with 2400 listed as pin wt.
