Flagstaff 831FKSS Towing

After visiting several Dealerships in the Metro Detroit area we have decided to go with the Flagstaff brand. I will be towing with a 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 with a Hemi. One thing of concern is the fact the trailer is 33 feet from the tongue to the bumper. Can anyone tell me if they have a problem towing this trailer? Do you get alot of sway? I have had several people tell me if I am going that big with a TT that I should go with a fifth wheel however we really like the front kitchen concept. We currently have a 20ft TT and hardly know its behind us. I just don't want take the "big" step and notbe happy about getting such a long trailer. Any help would be great!

Jason,

I am pulling a new 2008 Flagstaff 831KRSS which is the same length as what you are looking at. I have only pulled it twice on the highway since I got it and have had no problem. HOWEVER, I did get the Equlizer hitch setup on this rig so I can't compare to pulling something big without it, but I have no problem with it.

I have a 2005 dodge ram quad cab 4x4, and as I said it seems to pull fine, and I don't notice much sway at all. I did pull in moderate wind on the highway without difficulty.

I don't have a lot of experience pulling this specific trailer yet, but I do like the equalizer hitch better than the standard load leveling hitch with the separate sway control bars, which I have used in the past.

You need to check load range of your truck and make sure you`re not exceeding it, thats alot of camper , i have a 8296SS which is like yours but 3ft shorter but i am towing with a 2500HD but as far as sway goes these trailers trail real good, i`ve not had any trouble with too much sway and i only use wieght disturbition bar on mine i dont have the anti sway bar

Look at the tow rating on that dodge, and the dry weight of the trailer, add weight for fresh water(8lb/gal), propane, 60lb for each tank, and allow 700 for gear and food.

that will be a starting point to see if the truck will be ok or at top end of limit.

even if you are well within the limit, you will need a weight distributing hitch or have real problems towing the trailer,

Hi. I am thinking of buying a flagstaff 831krss and I have a Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 as you do but mine has the 4.7 v8 in it. I currently have a 26 ft travel trailer that is right at the same weight as the Flagstaff and it tows fine. I guess what im concerned about is if the weight shown for the flagstaff is accurate. have you ever weighed yours out to get an exact amount?

I average about 9 miles a gallon while towing the trailer i have. What do you think about the added length from 26ft to 33ft? will i get more sway? i currently have a weight dist. hitch and a sway control on the one i have. Any advice would be great.

I have a 8314ss Rockwood, I tow with a 1997 GMC Suburban 3/4 ton it has a 350 cu in engine and a 4/ 10 rear The camper weighs 7910 lbs fully loaded and it is 33', the hitch system is a Reese weight distribution and anti-sway, I have no problems. I have used the Reese system for 8 years. In 1980 when I started camping, It was recommended that If I was going to use a 1/2 ton to make sure it had a 4/10 rear, now a 1/2 ton does not come with a 4/10 rear you would have to change it out. I bought a 3/4 ton with a factory heavy duty tow package.

We are upgrading from a Flagstaff 26fs to a Rockwood 8315BSS. We currently have an Equalizer WD Hitch. With a tongue weight of 806# do I need to upgrade to the 1200# or the 1400# unit

We are picking up our 831FKBSS tomorrow for our first trip. Our Dealer is putting us in the 1200lb.

I have towed everything from pop ups to 31' trailers. Currently, I am towing a 31 ft Holiday Rambler Savoy with A 2008 F150, super crew, 5.4, 3.73 axle. It weighs 7000 lbs dry. If you are within weight constraints, length is not an issue if you have the proper sway control and tires on the vehicle. I am not sure what your truck is rated for. I switched to 10 ply, load range E tires for towing on my similarly equiped 2005 F150 and it made a big difference,. We are also looking at the 831fkss for weight reasons, but lenth really doesn't concern me that much. I believe the longer the trailer, the better it tracks. Of course, I am towing with a vehicle that is much better than the competition. LOL

I can tell you that our 2007 Rockwood 8315SS which is the same as the Flagstaff 831FKSS weighed 6200 lbs when it left the factory. Loaded for travel, it weighs 7570 lbs with 930 of that weight being hitch weight.

Length is not an issue, it tows very well. I am towing with a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 with the 5.7 L engine. I am using the Reese Dual Cam sway control setup.

I would not tow this trailer with only friction type sway control(s). Equalizer hitch or Reese Dual Cam are both good.

I am towing a Flagstaff 831BHSS which is 33 ft long with a Tundra 5.7L V8. I also have the Equalizer. I have towed in pretty heavy crosswind (gusting to 30 mph) and have had no problems with sway. And I have plenty of "get up and go" on the highway also!
