I have been with State Farm for 45 years I don't deal well with change. My one question is with discount rates what happens if you need them will they be there to pay or a big fight? The guy that manages my retirement money told me that I should cut my liability coverage. He says if we have a wreck and get sued us the lawyers will settle out of court for whatever coverage you have. He says they can't touch our home,SSI or retirement account. I haven't talked to my insurance agent. Any thoughts on that here?

Cuda,

IMHO if you are in an accident and injure someone or worse disable a primary wage earner of the family the lawyers are going to come after everything you have. They will come after your wages, pensions, assets, SSI and shirt. For a few hundred dollars a year it is just not worth it to me to reduce my liability insurance or my million dollar liability umbrella policy. Your investment consultant makes his money by investing the money you give him. The more you invest the more money he makes.....think about it. IMO he is giving you bad advise unless you like risking all you have worked for... up to you.

Not sure where the OP is from, but check out Erie Insurance Group. Like Nationwide, they are not "nation-wide," but if you live in one of the states they underwrite in, you're in business. I've had them on my cars, home, and TT/5-er since around 1995. They've crept up like everyone else has, but they've always beaten everyone else. I would never do business with Progressive again, and I have my bike with State Farm, as Erie doesn't do well competitively with bikes.

Part of the "creep" is that cars are just becoming more expensive to fix--wait until you have to take that fancy new F-150 with the "military grade aluminum" body for crash repair--you think the average Joe Schmoe body shop knows how to work on sheet aluminum? I can only imagine the premiums on those. My wife's LR Sport went through the roof because they switched from a steel body to aluminum--gotta meet those gov't mileage standards.

I shop as well and went with Good Sam's this year because of reputation and supposed better understanding and coverage of RV's, even though the rate was slightly higher than my packaged rate ($ 350 annually before discounts when not in use) with Met Life. I kept my auto insurance with Met Life and have been unable to find anyone that comes close to their rates ($1,200 annually for a 2010 Accura MDX and 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 Laramie) and have not had any significant increases even after I managed to have my foot slip off the break and hit the gas while backing up to the trailer from about 3 ft. away. Needless to say $ 2,000 dollars damage to rear bumper and tailgate and zero damage to trailer or hitch. They also have a descending deductible for every year of being accident free and in my case my only cost was a $200 deductible for my accident and there was no rate increase. My accident free descending deductible has, of course, reset to zero.
I also was with Geico since the 70's and had always been pleased with their rates and coverage. Well that changed a bout 3 years ago and after I dropped them, they came back with all kinds of offers. I shop every year for insurance and still can find none to beat Met Life. I am 69 with only a few minor fender benders and a clean no speeding driving record. Just lucky I guess. For the most part all insurance, pardon the phrase, sucks and you do need to shop frequently. I hope this has been useful and you are paying way too much for insurance unless there are factors I am unaware of. Happy travels!

I had my truck in for rust repair on the box by the rear wheel. The short story is the rear wheel fell off in a parking lot two weeks later and the wheel hit another car. In the end the body shop said they didn't have the wheel off to fix the box but will fix the other car as a courtesy. Nothing paid out from AAA for repairs. No rate increase yet. A year later I had a mishap going thru a parking lot gate and now my insurance rates go up. AAA tells me it's because I have had two claims, one not at fault and one at fault. I find out the body shop told AAA it was because of my lack maintaining my truck the wheel fell off,.... but he would pay $1500 to fix the other car. ??BS!! After 6 months of going round and round, AAA finally agreed that the body shop WAS at fault but wouldn't man up to it and took it off my file . That saved me $800/yr on a surcharge. This case the fight was worth it.

personally I would not even submit a claim for $1600 for a mailbox... I have found that insurance is best used for catastrophic events... even though you CAN get a couple of small claims paid, in the end you either get dropped or you pay for those claims in higher rates...

a friend got a new roof put on her house because of some wind damage that blew off some shingles... of course the roof "salesman" told her that insurance would pay for a new roof instead of just a patch job... well the insurance adjuster found a couple of other issues with the rear deck and other things with the house, and the homeowner found herself cancelled the next year and premium quotes from other insurers were like X4 of her pre-claim rates... so the FREE roof was hardly FREE!

YOU GOTTA PAY FOR FLO don't you know... ads are NOT cheap

After reading all these posts, I feel like I am getting a screaming deal on insurance! I have an 07' Duramax, 08' Civic, 77' F-250, and my 15' Wildcat TT. Full coverage on everything and the F-250 is valued at 10k. I am paying $2,268 per year. The trailer is only $300.00 per year. This is all with Country insurance.

I do not even know how it is that high????? I lived in Texas and mine was no where near that. I am in my 30s and live in Utah. I have a 12 Dodge ram 2500, 12 VW Jetta TDI on full coverage 500 deductible and I have a 15 EVO covered at full replacement cash value and I pay 2000 a year for my wife and I. We have a few (I say we but I mean my wife) claims and tickets too????????? That is high! What are they quoting you at? Free steaks dinners every friday for that kind of money!

with so many levels of coverage, deductibles and local (rate) areas covered it is impossible to compare rates with one another... I have been with Grange Ins out of Columbus, OH for 25 years after having been dropped by State Farm after one minor fender bender and a speeding violation within 2 years of each other. Grange's low rate of national advertising I believe makes their rates very competitive and I am happy with their service.

We had our trailer on our car policy at about $500 a year. This gave us depreciated replacement value and coverage only while connected to the TV. We moved it to our home policy and now it is covered for full replacement value and it's covered any where anytime. We now pay $56 a month for our home and trailer insurance.
