Tank Heaters

I have just purchased our first travel trailer. We got a Rockwood 2601. It came with a tank heater. Here is my question: Does the tank work on all tanks, including the black and gray tanks? If the heater does work in those tanks, does there need to be anything in those tanks if you run the tank heaters? I am concerned that if the tanks are empty, the heater will damage the tank.

You should have tank heater pads on all tanks and heat wraps on all lines. No you will not hurt your tanks with them on if empty. They have a temp sensor on them, they won't even turn on (even with the switch on) untill temp is 2deg. below freezing.

I have that option on our new TT. It arrived yesterday, and while climbing underneath, I can see the heater pads adhered to the underside of my black and grey tanks. Didn't get a chance yet to check the fresh water tank, but sure it's there too.

That's a good tip about them not coming on until the sensor detects enough of a temperature drop. One thing I plan on changing is the switch for my tank heater. It's on the cabinet beside the couch. No doubt it will be accidently turned on. I still plan on putting in a guarded switch. Even the indicator light will run the battery down over time.

Had to work early today, so took off early. Ended up stopping by the camper (couldn't help myself!).

Here's a picture of the heater pads adhered to the bottom of both the grey and black tanks, as well as wrapped around the dump lines (look on the drain line at the left edge of the picture).
