If you live in Florida and plan to stay there Go for it! If not don't do it.

This would be my question to you. Do you plan to have your family with you in your overloaded truck? Then you think about that and the fact that most insurance companies will find you at fault if involved in an accident and you are over you weight limit. I know a dually is more money but how much is your family worth?? Simple math!!

This is absolute BS. Please give us the details of an insurance company finding fault because of a fifth wheel overloading a truck.

I read a lot and follow a few different forums. In 7 years now, I recall one case where it was an acquaintance who got put through the ringer for killing someone in an accident.
I doubt most people will stand up and post, “I flubbed up” but I’ve yet to read a case where there is proven evidence of insurance failing to pay.

I tow a 16,000 lb Bighorn at 43 ft total length. My measured pin weight is 3100 lbs fully loaded and my CCC on the truck is 3750 lbs. With my hitch, two of US, 15 lb dog, some firewood and Generator we are under the CCC and rear axle weights.
Do I feel unsafe. No! Am I legal Yes. Would I travel up/down the Rockies likely not. In the rolling hills in Ontario and in the near north some 11% grades are certainly manageable but you need to be aware of the how you drive and keep all things in perspective.

I guess the part that gets me is the "I don't care" attitude of those who are obviously way over their tow ratings, yet do it anyway.
I used to tow on the edge...barely within the tow ratings.
Until I had that one moment in time that I thought was the end...coming down Hwy 34 out of Estes Park, Colorado.
Matter of fact...here it is about 20 minutes before that happened:
That was the last time that truck towed my previous bumper pull trailer.

So your comment doesn't really belong here.... the differences between pulling a bumper pull and 5th wheel aren't even close.

On the edge or overloaded...doesn't matter whether it is a popup, TT or a 5'ver!
You'll have the same result if something happens when you don't have enough truck!

When we got our new CC, i asked the guy that delivered it to the campground if my single axle Duramax would be ok. He said sure, he had pulled a triple axle toy hauler up from Key West to northern Wisconsin with no problems with SRW 3/4 ton.

Get a dually. Stability while towing makes it so easy and comfortable.

I asked my neighbor why he never got a dually for his 15,000lb Montana. He said "Why ? I've pulled the trailer coast to coast, up the divide, down the divide with my 2004 Chevy 2500HD Duramax SRW for 11 years, why would I get another truck ? "

“I’ve smoked crack for years and I’m not dead yet so it must be OK.”
Ah, I love that kind of logic. [emoji1787]

Ahh - this thread still has life.
Thanks again for the comments & feedback, especially those that share helpful, relevant personal experiences.

In doing my own research, I've found a SRW truck with specs that are promising as a TV for the 5er (SOB not to be named) which I'm considering.
Thanks again for the help.
