Travel Trailer With Generator
Hello all. I have a generator question for you guys/gals. The wife and I travel about 90% of the year for work. We are tired of staying in hotels and are going to purchase a travel trailer. We have our dogs that will be going with us and need them to be comfortable while we are at work, whether it be hot or cold outside. We will not be able to plug into shore power everywhere we go. That being said, are there any travel trailers that have built in generators? If not, we can run a generator for power as we can check on them throughout the day. Another issue would be finding a way to keep an inverter generator safe from the thieves. Any info or advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The only TTs I know of, that come with a built-in generator, are Toyhauler TTs.
I've owned two TTs and simply carried my inverter generator in the truck bed.

Generator Boxes
Most Travel Trailers don't come with a generator. I bought a 2000W Champion 73540i portable generator. I used to keep it in the bed of my truck, but now that we are living full time in the TT, I wanted the space back in my truck. So I bought a bumper mounted generator box from HERE.
The box actually costs more than the generator! However, it is top-of-the-line. There are cut outs so you can run it locked inside the box and the construction is top rate. The covers over the cut outs are just like the portal covers you'd find on a boat. The company even makes stackable boxes for an extra gas tank, etc. Go to their website and you can read about them.

Just buy a ford powerboost or one of the other models with a on board genny. Depending on the trailer might be a perfect fit.

The only issue would be that my tow vehicle would be gone while working. I would need a built in or a secure box as above, which looks like a fine setup.

We got the LowPro Lockdown for our Honda 2000 generators. We had 2 on the bumper paralleled so we could run our A/C. We just put covers on them when not in use. Worked great.

Gotcha. Only thing I could recommend then is a small “chase” vehicle, but if I was boondocking for weeks at a time, I think I’d rather a stand alone genny anyways.
I would go with a nice quiet(er) inverter style genny and I wouldn’t necessarily buy the least expensive either. It sounds like you will get more than the “occasional” use out of it, so I would want something tried and true that I wouldn’t have to worry about. As for security of it, depending on your style of trailer you might have a fold out platform on the back that you could put it or them when in use, and secure them to it.

I don't have the info handy, but I've also seen genny mount that clamp to the tongue above the propane tanks.
I still keep mine in the truck bed, but will eventually look for something to get it out of there.

Have you considered a motorhome? Most have built in generators that run off the large vehicle fuel tank?

We had thought about it in the past. We changed our mind about a motorhome because of the areas we can get sent to in the winter. We decided to stick with our 4wd for those instances.

Outdoors RV offers a built-in generator in some of their tt's.

I spent this last January traveling and encountered several "working couples" with toy haulers. Spent some time talking with one couple who had used the "garage" to create a home office and the "Ramp" became a really nice patio for relaxing in the late afternoon/evening when the work day ended.
If I were to ever return to work (fat chance ) and needed a travel trailer to work from a Toy Hauler would be my first choice with built in generator, fueling station, large FW Tank, etc, etc.

I have a Forest River Shockwave T27FQDX. It’s a bumper pull toy hauler but to me it doesn’t have the normal cheap/plain toy hauler fold up feel that I’ve seen in many of the bumper pulls. It came equipped with an onboard generator, onboard 20 or 25 gal gas tank with a fuel station, instant hot water heater, solar, cooktop with a oven, separate bedroom, and plenty of seating and table tops.

That's what we have been looking at. The Grey Wolf 22RR Black Label. Love the thought of the open space. The wife would like a door going to the garage, but then we would have to move up to a 5th wheel and more initial cost.

I just bought a Boost 31QB and it has a built in Yamaha generator with remote control. Bumper pull also.

Now winter in an RV can be a completely different discussion depending on how cold is cold?

I know exactly what you mean. We spent two winters in a 1988 Skyline Nomad while we were working in Belfield, ND.🥶
