I winterized my camper last weekend and parked it for the winter today. Just in time by the looks of it as everything is white here tonight. Going to be a long winter waiting to go camping again. 😥😥❄️❄️

Ditched the Norcold and installed a 10.1 cf residential. Never looking back now. Anybody interested in a 6 month old Norcold 8cf? This was the second one in a year. First and second leaked water down the back of the fridge into the compartment during thaw cycles. I may just keep it in the shop, not sure yet.

At least in Heaven, RVs will be perfect, and I won't have to keep fixing them.

OC is right as usual. Zip Ties are not UV resistant. They get brittle with age.

On the bright side it may fall off at home in your driveway; then again ...

Those C-130's you flew on had numerous zip ties behind the instrument panel. I know, I put a lot of them there. They had to be the black variety because they were the only ones UV resistant and approved for the install. Just a comment.

The ones you installed were not exposed to the elements either.

Perhaps you have not been aboard a C-130 and seen the large lower windows behind the main instrument panel just above the flight deck C-130 doesn't have a cockpit) where intense sun light comes right through to the wire harnesses that have the zip ties (could be hundreds) for bundle routing.

Still not like being outside and exposed to the elements.

So I did an internet crawl and found numerous references to the "UV resistance" of black zip ties.

Most black zip ties are just colored that way and are no better able to resist UV light than any other "box store" zip tie.

However, MS3367-XX Zipties ARE UV resistant. The trade name for these Zipties is Halar(c). They come in many colors including natural (off white).

http://hermanproav.com/product/34183...-Cross-Section

http://hermanproav.com/product/6997/...i3caAiIC8P8HAQ

Halar®
Although weaker than general-purpose nylon 6/6 (about 37%), Halar is resistant to a wide range of chemicals such as concentrated hydrofluoric and sulfuric acids. It is radiation resistant. Halar also withstands high temperatures, ultraviolet light exposure and meets U.L. flammability requirement 94V-O. Its outstanding characteristic is a lower smoke density when burned. This makes Halar more desirable for use in areas where smoke generation is a concern.

(Like a cockpit or air plenum)

http://www.idealind.com/media/pdfs/p...rial_specs.pdf

Note there is a mil spec for a UV resistant Ziptie that is not made of Halar but it has limitations as well and the MilSpec compliance will be on the package.

Nylon 6/6 - UV Stabilized - Mil Spec MS3368 for UV (On package)
http://www.nelcoproducts.com/pdf/cab...l_spec_web.pdf

General purpose nylon 6/6 with increased resistance to ultraviolet light. Carbon black is one of the most effective stabilizers known today. A uniform dispersion of carbon black provides good ultraviolet light resistance without adversely affecting physical properties. The addition of carbon black, or any other ultraviolet light stabilizer, prolongs the useful life of plastic products used outdoors, but it does not totally eliminate the destructive effects of the light.

I must emphasize that the package must quote the MilSpec, state UV resistant, and be Nylon bonded with Carbon Black and not a pigment. The Milspec UV resistant ties only come in UV Black.

The NSN for aviation is supposed to be the Halar Ziptie but the cheaper Carbon Black ones are a suitable sub.

(Edited and much more complete and correct)

Seriously? You guys act like the deterioration will happen overnight. I'm pretty sure his intentions are not meant to be a permanent hold. The UV rays are not going to affect it for months, if it does at all.

Besides, maybe Ependydad is a risk taking thrill seeker and loves living on the edge. I'm not trying to take that away from him!

Some folk's "temporary" fixes become permanent until something happens.

There is nothing so permanent as a temporary fix....

Who knew that zip ties had such variety and breadth, and that they had military counterparts and ones with different additives etc.
Since they seem to get everyone so excited maybe I should write a book/story about them, where the climax of the story will be when one weak and faded ziptie gives up the good fight, perishes under pressure, and leaves all his comrades to take the strain.
I'm sure I can count on y'all to buy a copy, right?

Every year I have to "temporarily fix" the down spout in the back yard.
I zip tie it to the power feed from the roof. Every spring the spout is down and there are broken Zip ties on the ground.

Maybe this spring I will climb up there and put new screws in; or maybe I will just Zip tie it again and get another year out if them.

Actually, was hoping you would write a book on this thread that brings so much needed information to the forum:

"Only drink real beers (English ales, porters, stouts, and some darker ambers etc), so very few have twisty tops, BUT I have a bottle opener on my keyring, which is in my pocket pretty much every waking moment, so I'm good".

Nice mod for folks who don't have a bottle opener handy 24/7 tho

Not in the least Lou, never seen you make a temporary fix that wasn't permanent.

The package did specifically state that they are UV resistant (not sure about all of the other stuff). And it'll definitely fall off when I'm home as the camper is home these days.
