I've never seen anyplace where we have bought propane that didn't meter the propane, so we only pay for what we get. Then there are "exchange" places like Home Depot, Walmart and several others that take your tank and give you a filled one. But their prices are terrible, upwards to $20 & more for a 20# tank when you can fill your own for $1.50 to $3.00 per gallon.

And rumor has it (I'm just passing on what I've read) that the exchange places only give you 70-75% full tanks.

We are lucky to find it in NW for $1.50, most are nearer to $3, a few over $3.
Long drive to the midwest to save on propane!

Tare's 19.6# for this tank. As received, it weighed 31.4#. That's 14.8# of propane, 5.2# short. [Edited, mistakenly said gallons rather than #.]
It was still a good deal.

There is some misinformation and incorrect terminoloy being used here, that is worth correcting as to not confuse people.
First, Rockfordroo is correct that in most exchange places only fill the 20 pound cylinders with 15 pounds of propane which is 75% of the total "propane" capacity of 20 pounds.
Sidecarflip seems to be confusing water capacity of a cylinder (not propane capacity) and that a cylinder can only be filled to 80% of a cylinders total water capacity. This is a common error as people confuse water capacity with propane capacity. 80% of the cylinders water capacity is not close to 75% of a cylinders propane capacity. This was also what the propane companies got sued for misleading customers on.
Now to Johnbryanpeters post, he just simply stated gallons, instead of pounds...which is another misnomer. You can measure propane by weight or gallons. Using the tare weight (empty weight) of a propane cylinder, then you add the weight of the propane to get it's full weight (not gallons). A gallon of propane averages around 4.2 pounds at 60 degrees with a 20 pound cylinder holding around 4.7 gallons.
Here is a great discussion with links for those that may interested in reading, to help in the understanding of propane cylinders, as well as water/propane capacities, weights, and gallons. This is a subject that RV'ers should kinda familiarize themselves with as the terminology can be confusing..

Thanks - I had a major typo, which I have corrected, meant pounds, said gallons.

Places I went to before TS all used the pay for a full tank method. Drop tank outside, go in and pay for fill, then take tank to filling station where they put it on a scale and pump until "full". So I used to run the tank down as empty as I could get it.

After discount tank was $36.53 before sales tax. Now to figure out what I want to use for fittings and how to mount it.

MR Trailer Sales on Deer Valley road in Phoenix only charges for what they put in the tank, and today $2.05 a gallon, which I feel is fair.

Winterized mine today. Made a mess in the shop, as I only caught about 5 gallons of water from the water heater. Had the ole' belt driven air handler going to blow it dry!
Also ordered two new vacuum breakers for the tank flushes. The brass ones. Had one get "stuck" at Ocean Lakes this weekend.
Wasn't planning on winterizing this one this year since it's parked inside, but it it supposed to be below freezing for a couple of days (down to 9 for a low and not getting above 30 for a few days) and I haven't figured out how well the building insulation will do. We don't have heat in the shop, and I am headed to Mexico and then Poland so I will be out for the next few weeks and didn't want to risk it. I have the temp data logger going to see if I need to mess with it next year. Of course, we "should" have heat and AC in the shop this spring but we will see how that goes.
Got the 4-wheelers ready to play in the snow. NC will be shut down if we get the 8" they are forecasting, but we will play.
Going to ride the mountain bike in the morning on the (hopefully) snow covered trail. After that, headed to the RV show to look at a couple of toy haulers. We have found a few floor plans we like, but are inching closer to keeping what we have. If we decide to keep what we have then it will get the third AC when I get back in town and a Trav'ler DIRECTV Satellite.

Winterized. Have scheduled a couple of camping trips and looking to set up some more. Years ago, I thought when we retired our schedules would be completely free... now we find ourselves scheduling around doctor's appointments and prescription refills.

We also live in WS and really wanted to go to the RV show. If you can, post your travel experience to Greensboro. Thanks.
