We avoid 94 through Chicago and 294 to the west whenever possible. Drop onto 355 and hit 80. You still have to fight around the 80/90/94 mess across the bottom of the lake, but as others have noted, an early start or late start will help a little.

FWIW, from someone who has done this hundreds of times.

Depending on where East you are heading, picking up the Skyway (toll road) cuts off some mileage and is usually good. There has been some construction on the Illinois side. Been a few months since I was on the Skyway. On a bad note, you still need to take the Dan Ryan through Chicago to get there. You also need to be in the local lanes to get on the Skyway, but you need to be in the left lane in the local lane, not the right lane.
If you take the Skyway, you'd better be independently wealthy. It's very expensive just for a car. Add a trailer and it's downright criminal, considering it's only 7.8 miles long.
