Campgrounds along the Gulf?

Afternoon All-

Anyone have any recommendations for campgrounds along the Gulf? We are headed to LA, MS, and AL in early August and would love to find a place on the water. Nothing we have found is jumping out at us.

Thanks so much-

Mike

Hi,

Take a look at Gulf State Park, near Gulf Shores. It's been our winter getaway in many years, and ought to be great any time.

Waveland, MS (near Bay St. Louis) Buccaneer State Park. 1 block to the beach, FHU. We stayed there in March. If you stay here, take a half-day to visit the John C. Stennis Space Center.

Gulf State Park, Orange Beach, AL. FHU, boardwalks connect campground to beach. We stayed there in March, too. Lots to do in the Orange Beach/Gulf Shores area.

Here's a link to the blog we wrote about both places...

Enjoy!

You didn't mention Florida, but if you are heading that direction and want "beach", Henderson State Park at Destin and Topsail Hill State Preserve just east of Destin are both excellent, but getting into them might be a gamble. They tend to fill up and sell out pretty darn quickly.

We really enjoy Fort Pickens (Gulf Shore)- great history lesson to boot, tho this current storm is probably hammering it!

Whatever you choice you want to make reservations NOW because it will still be summer break for schools and campgrounds will be hard to get, for most FL state parks you are already to late, they get booked the first minute they are available which is 11 months in advance.

Two good parks

We just returned today from a trip that included the Gulf coast. Two excellent parks we enjoyed are the French Quarter RV Resort in New Orleans, about a six-block walk into the heart of the French Quarter, and the Gulf Beach RV Resort at Biloxi, MS, just across US 90 from a lovely white sand beach. Both are a bit pricey, but have excellent facilities, and considering the convenience, well worth it. They accept trailers as well as motorhomes.

If your near Texas, Long Island Village in Port Isabel. Located on the far end of a swing bridge in a gated community. Inexpensive food in the area. Check it out on line if interested.

Gulf Beach RV Resort, Biloxi is awesome. Beautiful , couple of blocks from both beach and bay and owners are great. Have to stay on a Sat for their locally catered free lunch.

Bayou Segnette State Park in Westwego, LA is a wonderful place from which to visit New Orleans if you are so inclined. It is located on the "West Bank" with easy access to both New Orleans and the French Quarter and other parts of New Orleans area by one of two bridges across the Mississippi River. We have stayed here, it is an older park but it is quiet, the staff is very friendly and the location is ideal!

Here is my suggestion for Alabama, Meaher State Park at Mobile, AL. It is located right on Mobile Bay and some of the sites are separated from the water by only a 30 yard grass strip.

We spent a week there during the Super Regionals for Baseball and Regionals for Softball which were going on simultaneously.

It is quiet, convenient and a delight to stay at. When going back to Mobile this will be out place to stay. We LOVED IT!!

Here is the website:

Thee is also Fort Morgan RV Park in Gulf Shores Alabama, South of Mobile on the East side entrance to Mobile Bay. Haven't been there but it looks and sounds nice.

We stayed at Emerald Beach in Navarre FL. Nice park about half way between Destin and Pensacola. If there is one open, it's worth the extra money for a bay side site. Navarre beach is right over the bridge and is BEAUTIFUL! White sands and beautiful blue gulf water. There is a National Park there, right on the beach. It also has a special "dog beach", as well

Our favorite is St Joeseph State Park on the peninsula south of Port St Joe Florida.
We have camped there since the 60s and love it.
Right on the Gulf.

Mississippi beaches are not on the Gulf of Mexico. They are actually on the Mississippi Sound. There are no waves and the beaches are not that nice. Dauphin Island in Mobile county Alabama is on the gulf. There is a campground there, and you can walk to the bird santuary, or the sealab, and beaches. Gulf shores Alabama or Orange beach is the best. More to do and beaches are beautiful. There are no campgrounds on the beach, but several in the area. Gulf State Park has about 600 sites, but wait for school to start, or you will have a hard time finding a place. Some people say St. Andrews or Henderson State park, The beaches are fine, but that is about another three hours past Alabama beaches, and hard to get sites. Fort Pickens is in Pensacola, not far from Gulf Shores, but it rains a few inches, it floods, and you will need to leave.

We are going to give this place a try heading there after the FROG Florida Rally. Located directly across from the beach and dogs are allowed on the beach

We love St. Andrews's State Park, not sure any sites will be available tho since we book our vacations there 6 months in advance.
