How do You get a Firearm into Alaska

If I wanted to drive my coach from lower 48 to Alaska for an extended stay, how do I get my shotgun into Alaska???? Not excited about being in Alaska wild without protection....

Either fill out all the paperwork for Canada, or ship it.

What he said ^^^.

You can literally do a verbatim google search on your post topic heading and find tons of info.

Good luck driving through Kanada with those evil guns.

"Easy" is relative. One thing "easy" is not is "effortless".

I take a rifle into Canada every year. Have the paperwork filled out in triplicate, don't sign it until asked and have $25 ready.... takes about 10 minutes if no line.

Ok Guys, keep the advice legal. The site team will clean out advice that recommends breaking the laws that could get members in trouble.

You want to pass through Canada packed like Rambo.
You must follow their rules.

Here's a thought, wait until you get to Alaska and buy a firearm there. When it's time to come back have it shipped to a licensed dealer near your home.

Just did this for our trip thru Canada into Alaska.....
Google up Canada Non Resident Firearm Declaration, and print off 3 copies.
Fill them out EXCEPT for signing and dating it. It is best to have this paperwork with you, filled out, rather than waiting until you get to the border crossing.
When you get to Canada crossing make sure it is UNLOADED, and you ONLY have 25 rounds of shotgun ammo, or less, for the shotgun your declaring. Make sure the ammo is kept seperate and away from the firearm.
When asked if you are transporting a firearm, tell them you are, what type, and produce the paperwork.
You will be asked to pull up and off, and to bring the paperwork inside the border crossing building. There you will be asked to sign and date the form, and pay a $25 dollar fee. They will issue you a temperory permit good for 60 days. They may or may not ask to see the firearm.
Whole thing took 10 minutes.
We entered Canada, entered Alaska, re-entered Canada, and re-entered the USA, and I was never asked to produce the shotgun we were carrying. All asked to see the permit.
And, this is for long guns or shotguns. Handguns are a totally different policy, and it's best not to try and bring one into Canada.

Additionally, question #6 on the declaration form, Reason for bringing firearm into Canada, check box marked "Protection Against Wildlife".
They don't want to see "Other" which, to them, means possibly shooting someone, or possibly selling it illegally.
And, be prepared to take responsibility for any actions you may take. Even if you are in the "right" as far as having to use the firearm to protect yourself against another person, you still may be in a "world of hurt" as far as legal action you may face. Not anywhere like here in the USA as far as "standing your ground" or "I feared for my life".
That dosen't go over too big in Canada.

Don't know about buying out of state. I thought you needed to be a resident of the state to purchase and take delivery. To buy one in Alaska, you would need to establish Alaska residency.

Know how to disassemble your shotgun. When I went through I had to take the barrel off to be measured. 18" is the minimum barrel length. My shotgun was 18.5" and was engraved on the barrel but they wanted it verified.

in the US, you can purchase a long gun in another state. Handguns must be shipped to a FFL in the purchasers state. For instance, I am MO resident, i can purchase in Illinois but must follow the 24 hour wait period to pick up. i have done this on multiple occasions

I believe it needs to be a neighboring state for long guns, your own state for handguns

You do not need to ship it to a FFL dealer any longer. As of a few years ago, you can now ship it to yourself. The recipient can not open it. They can store it for you until you arrive. Then ship it home or to an address in the lower 48 on your return

So once again I learned something new; even the "contiguous state" rule was changed in 2011.

Q: From whom may an unlicensed person acquire a firearm under the GCA?
A person may only acquire a firearm within the person’s own State, except that he or she may purchase or otherwise acquire a rifle or shotgun, in person, at a licensee’s premises in any State, provided the sale complies with State laws applicable in the State of sale and the State where the purchaser resides. A person may borrow or rent a firearm in any State for temporary use for lawful sporting purposes.

[18 U.S.C. 922(a)(3) and (5), 922(b)(3), 27 CFR 478.29 and 478.30]

This is to "acquire" a firearm. In Government speak, this means to "transfer ownership"

https://www.atf.gov/resource-center/...aspdf/download

6. May I lawfully ship a firearm to myself in a different State?
Any person may ship a firearm to himself or herself in the care of another person in the State where
he or she intends to hunt or engage in any other lawful activity. The package should be addressed to
the owner “in the care of” the out-of-State resident. Upon reaching its destination, persons other than
the owner must not open the package or take possession of the firearm.

(I teach this stuff....:-)
