Labrador and Newfoundland

Has anyone driven HWY 389 in Quebec? and HWY 500 in Labrador? Can we tow a small(Scamp Trailer) on those gravel roads? Also we want to know if it is absolutely essential to make Ferry reservations? We will go in August and stay til mid sept so we have time, if needed, to wait for an available ferry. We are going to drive from Quebec across Labrador to Goose Bay then take ferry to Cartwright. Then travel south to another ferry which will take us to Newfoundland and so on to Nova Scotia. We don't want to be on a timetable so would like to avoid ferry reservations. Anyone done it?
Thanks
Ambrose
