over night campgrounds

Hey guys and gals, wondering how everybody goes about finding a campground when its just a stop for the night on a long trip. I did it last year and my stop over campground gave me a hard time because I ended up pulling in on a Saturday of one leg of my trip. I try to work my schedule the best I can so I don't inconvenience the campground. Any tips on how you plan a long trip would be appreciated.

We use campgroundreviews.com. we just enter the city where we plan to stop and it shows all the state parks, Corps of engineer Parks, RV parks, national parks in that area. We then narrow the list based on our preferences and mostly reviews. We have also used it to plan destination trips and found it to be invaluable.

Same as bjlakatos - campgroundreviews.com is a great place to look for a place to stop. You can see where it is, get a review, hit the campground website, etc. all from one place. I always use it, if I am going somewhere I have not been to, before.

Mapquest my trip

Zoom in to stops about 3-5 hours apart.

Google Campgrounds at that location.

Research them.

Don't worry about how the campground feels. They are for you to use. They get many bad reviews and then lost business will be worse. Be glad they had a site for you.

On a long trip we usually pull in later in the evening, not unusual for us to map Cracker Barrel locations, pull in, eat dinner, go to sleep.

Think you just hit a bad one. Have found most really accommodating. Even if same day, we do try to call ahead as early as possible, many just say come on in we have a spot.

when we're traveling to a destination, and only need an overnight stop to rest/sleep, its interstate Welcome Centers and Rest Stops, .... that's what they're there for, ....... stop whenever we want to, early or late, ... don't require reservation, ... don't have to stop traveling early to get to them before the gate closes, .... don't have to leave the main road to go find it, .... plus many more reasons ..... but, that's just us and the way we travel, .... happy trailering

I have found that the journey KOAs do not have two night minimums on weekends. They are targeting the traveler. We used KOAs for our one nighters throughout our three week trip out west and we had no issues for any minimum stays.

We have run into minimum 2 night stays for the other types of KOAs, particularly on a holiday weekend.

Thanks for all the info. I use rv park reviews quite a bit. This June we're heading to Gulf shores Alabama and I want to break the drive in half. Thinking Cave city Kentucky as my half way. We did that on that on the way to Tennessee last year on the way down. Ended up driving straight thru on the way back and it was to much at 12hrs.

We use the RV Parky app. Works great and allows you to search where you are or at a location.

When we stop for lunch (noonish) we look at RV Parky or naps to figure where we’ll be in two hours——about 100 miles at 50 mph average then make a reservation or just go for it. That gives us time to set up relax, eat and sleep leaving us refreshed for the next days trip.

We stop for lunch and start calling, I normally know about how far I am going to drive in one day. I use rv parks and campgrounds, sometimes rv parky. I don't normally stop till about four o'clock. On Saturday I'll stop for two nights, I don't like to drive on Sunday. I like to take at least one day off a week to just lay around and be lazy.

We did a month long trip in December from California to Bristol, TN.....we used Roadtrippers ParkAdvisor and Rest Stops apps. Rest stops was great for judging where to stop for our two dogs and making lunch and stretching our legs. Roadtrippers and ParkAdvisor were great tools to see where we would stop for the night.....both going and coming we only stayed single nights and most were very useful. Hope you have a great trip!

Pre-trip I use RVTrip Planner to give me an idea how far we'll get each day. In-route, we use the AllStays app to look for campgrounds once we know when we are really going to stop.
