Toll roads
Traveling from New Brunswick Canada thru eastern and central states to Montana. My question is can you still pay at toll booths as we're already on the road and a transponder is out of the question. Thanks for any help I can get. Ron.

in my experience, between labor shortages and the pandemic, most of the manned toll booths on freeways have gone the way of the dodo. But the unmanned ones will read your license plate if you don't have a transponder, and they mail you a bill, though the cost is usually higher than it would be if you had one.
If you are coming down through the States - Maine, NH, Mass, NY, etc, then I would suggesting stopping in Mass and picking up one of their EZ-Pass transponders. They will work in NH, Mass, NY, PA, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. I don't think you would see any tolls west of Illinois. There is no cost for the Mass one, but they will charge you a fee if you lose it.
You can attach it to a credit or debit card and it will grab 20 bucks out of your account. Each toll will debit from that balance, and when it gets down to a couple of dollars it will automatically charge back up to $20.
I live in Washington State and ordered one by mail before a trip to New England a couple of years ago. We successfully used it in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine.

That trend has nothing to do with either, I believe. It's cheaper for toll road authorities to invest in cameras and RFID sensors and never pay a human again.

In many states you can sign up for an account with their toll system, register your tag and pay your bill online. If you do, you get the cheaper rate.
That applies even to rental cars. You can set a time/date range for which you accept responsibility. That way you don't have to pay the rental car company exorbitant rates.

I know with our Ipass in Illinois which also works with EZPass. People without a transponder can pay online. You will have to remember or make a note of the toll booth numbers driven through.
Also in Illinois. Anyone can get a transponder on the spot at any Jewel grocery stores and some other places. Perhaps EZPass is like that too?

You can google each state for more info

Most toll booths are unmanned (notice most) and if you don't have a transponder or are registered, you'll pay a higher "pay by plate" fee.
While it doesn't work in many Western states we have the E-Pass Xtra (now called UNI) and it works in 19 states. Available through the Central FL Expressway Authority. We live in PA and it works wonderfully up and down the East Coast. Way better than the EZ-Pass we had.
Some states have a mobile app you can sign up for (since you are already on the road) and pay a cheaper rate through the app. Or... if you are somewhere a few days, many transponders can be mailed to you once you set up an account.

Last year pulling my TT from Arkansas to Racine,WI and back I drove through a Illinois unmaned toll. Signe informed driver of photos. I have not received a bill or instructions on how to pay. I know others that have gone through not home state tolls on travels and never received a bill. I can imagine that some states see the plate (and RV) one time, that it's not worth the man power and postage to send a bill out of state. Crossing the bridge going to Destin, FL, they will mail a bill for the toll.

How long does it take (on average) before the bill arrives in the mail? Just looking for a ballpark range. Don't want to get stopped for not paying a toll I never received?

E-ZPass is a multi-state electronic toll pass that works in states from North Carolina to Maine and west to Illinois, and now in the entire state of Florida. If your transponder is part of the E-ZPass Group (I-PASS, RiverLink Portable, NC Quick Pass Portable), your toll pass is accepted on CFX roadways.
