I use a combination of RVParky.com and Garmin Basecamp.
Put start and destination in Basecamp and how far I want to travel per day and let it pick a route. That gives me a set of cities as centerpoints for the intermediate stops I then "tune" the route using RVParky to find intermediate campgrounds/Walmarts, etc. RVParky also shows miles between stops so that helps keep the driving distance under control. After I get a route I like in RVParky, I export the route as a GPX file and load that back into Basecamp and make that a route. I make campgrounds from RVParky waypoints in Basecamp. I may add additional waypoints in Basecamp to force the route to take the roads that I want to use. Once that is done, I migrate the route to my Garmin GPS.
Note that RVParky is free, but I saw somewhere that it may be discontinued.
