Where are the worst roads

The easier question is which state has best roads.. You'll find the gas tax and other taxes for roads are used for pet projects of the elected officials. When damage becomes too great on highways then and only then will the patch crew be dispatched.

I-65 going into Birmingham from south. Like driving over a washboard. Lanes, narrow and both TV and TT bouncing like a baby in a walker.

I still thank I-20 going into Shreveport is the worse, they have working on it for 20 years. It has been rough and under construction that long.

Made the mistake of hitting Atlanta at 5 PM on a Friday afternoon. Roads were not that bad, but traffic, abandoned cars and wrecks everywhere. We usually plan going through cities early or very late. It looked like people drove their car until it broke or they hit something and then just left them. Everyone but us was driving 75 to 85 and it was raining. We saw 3 wrecks w/ in 2 hours.
South of Birmingham was like being on a rollercoaster-I 20.

Yes! I-65 @Birmingham, Alabama is horrible, just horrible.

You nailed it. The soft soil here in Louisiana, along with low bid contracting and lack of maintenance place us in first place in yet another unfavorable category.

Yep...I will second Louisiana. Also, if you ever walk around New Orleans, you better watch where you step...giant holes, tree roots making the sidewalk buckle 2 feet high. Like a 3rd world country.

I25 from south of Denver for 20 miles the absolute worst stretch of road I have had the mis-pleasure of driving on. It's being rebuilt but honestly can't tell the rebuilt from the original. Yea all been warned.

I'm not going to deny that Interstates through Shreveport-Bossier are bad but after driving in other states, there are bad roads everywhere. Just got back from Oklahoma and some of the roads there were really bad, we hit some really bad stretches in Missouri, Illinois, and Kentucky last year. Pennsylvania Turnpike was horrible a few years ago. Came up on a terrible section of I-59 in Georgia that almost tore the front end out of our motorhome. I hate driving through Chattanooga and Nashville Tennessee as well as Jackson, MS because of the bad sections of Interstate. Arkansas has a few problems maintaining their parts of I-30 and I-40. We have hit bad potholes in almost every state we've traveled. Maybe because it's familiar but I'd rather travel Shreveport-Bossier roads over many that we have been on in other places. The bad part is that usually it's a surprise when we hit those bad stretches.

US 99 (now CA 99) Bakersfield to Sacratomato that runs up the east side of the Central Valley.

Don't be tempted to take it instead of I-5 on the west side of the Valley.

(I-5 has had major repaving work a few years ago and is in much better shape than it was prior to that)(also, they remodeled many of the rest areas and did a great job with the new restroom buildings)

Don't like bumpy roads on I-20 in Jackson, MS area and US 49 from Jackson to Hattiesburg.


Also, I-10 in Texas needs many more rest stops instead of "picnic" areas with no services.


IMHO: Florida is by far the state with the most and best rest areas on the Interstates.

I haven't traveled any Interstate without problems from one state to the next but I will mention that I90 through South Dakota had to be the best and smoothest experience for any road I have travelled on concerning Interstates. Bad experiences, I25 north into Colorado from New Mexico especially through Pueblo and the Springs area. I16 is no picnic through South Carolina. Again, most Interstates just based on truck traffic and maintenance delays per state dictate poor experiences especially in and around large cities. Have you been through the Chicago Land experience, ok then just know the Tolls will kill you if not the roads.

The roughest highway (interstate) I ever drove was Milwaukee to Green Bay. (Go ACME Packers!)

We've been in 49 of the 50 states, lived in eight. I have yet to see new taxes go to the promised expense.

Michigan has pretty rough roads. First, they have one of the highest (if not the highest) weight limits in the country. Second, they have huge commercial traffic between the US and Canada. Third, they have the annual freeze and thaw cycles that plays hell with roads.
