Yellowstone National park - FROG Goshen Jun 29th - Aug 14
I and a friend both are meeting in West Yellowstone June 29th and spending 5 nights there for the 4th of July. (Yes we have Reservations made)
We will be staying in the Grizzly RV Resort in West Yellowstone before we head east to Goshen for the FROG Rally.
So we have July 5th - Aug 14th to make it across.
Some of our ideas are to take in
Grand Tetons, Jackson Hole, Cody, Bad Lands, Mount Rushmore so far.
Any other stops we shouldn't miss?
Also any great campground you really liked would be helpful.
Not sure if we will take I-94 or I-90 across. Any suggestions?
Thanks Iggy
PS anyone else heading the same way? Come join us for the trip to Goshen Indiana FROG Rally.

If you leave West Yellowstone and go to Cody, I would go south from there if going to Mount Rushmore. Rt 14 & rt 16 through the Big Horns is pretty rough with an RV, so I'm told. We are making the journey, a few days before you arrive in West Yellowstone, and have decided to take a slightly southernly route to avoid those 2. Those are actually the only 2 routes that Wyoming gives warnings about on their website.

We plan to take it easy on our trip to Goshen. Rt 14 or Rt 16 maybe what we will take. Slow down a bit and enjoy the scenery.
We will have to see how the road is thru Yellowstone out the east side is like. In most cases we shouldn't have any issues with our motorhomes and toads.
We may even head north and hit I-94 east which is more miles but all interstate highway.
I will check out the Wyoming website about those routes.

Mountain Roads, this pretty much did it for me. While I'm not that worried about myself, I am traveling with others who are not as experienced.

I'm sure we will meet up some where on the trip east with others.
It is neat when you find others in the campground heading the same way.
The one way to know its me is that I have a red Fiat I tow with Arizona plates.
See pictures from our last trip to the Grand Tetons in 2012.

Iggy, you can not miss us as we pull our Cedar Creek with a Kenworth with a Smart car on the truck, but with any luck the Creek might be replaced with either a Cedar Creek Champagne or a River Stone, fingers crossed!!!!!

We will be spending a week in Sault Saint Marie at Aune Osboune Campground before going to Goshen. It is a great campground right on the river. We spend time watching the large ships heading to and from the locks. Come join us! Reservations are a must and need to be made as early as possible.

That looks like a great location to relax before heading south to Goshen.
I haven't been up in that area. I will have to remember to take our passports just in case we do something like that. Thanks.

It is in the upper peninsula of MI, so Passport not needed.

If you are traveling from Yellowstone to Mt. Rushmore you might want to include the Custer Battlefield and Devil's Tower in your itinerary. As a history buff I really, really enjoyed seeing the Custer Battlefield.

We took that trip after Goshen last year and enjoyed every minute! Little Big Horn Battlefield, I did not schedule enough time there, would schedule a half day there. There is a nice new campground close by, 7th Ranch RV Camp. No shade but very nice. Oasis Campground, Oacoma, SD was nice also. If going again I would stop at the minute man missile national historic site and probably the corn palace. We did not stop at Wall Drug, not sure if we would on another trip. Cell and WiFi is very sparse in those areas and campgrounds. Great trip I know you will enjoy! Hope to see you in Goshen!!

Going out of the park through the NE entrance (Cook City, MT) is a little nicer drive and then down through Sunlight Basin to Cody. If you have the time take your toad from Sunlight to Red Lodge, MT and back over "Top of world" should not be missed. Still have to go over Dead Indian Pass, but is nicer drive and a little easier.

If you stop in Cooke City, MT, there is a little Motel bar there called Hoosiers. Stop in and say Hi to my cousin and her husband, who own it. The NE Silvergate entrance to Yellowstone leads to Cooke City and the Beartooth highway. I've been told it can be done in an RV, just not sure I would want to. Maybe late season in August, but even in late June there can be snow walls 15' tall on both sides of the road, where they cut the road open in spring.

We really enjoyed the Game Loop campground in Custer State Park. Great location to visit the Black Hills and all the attractions. Mount Rushmore, Wind Cave, and many scenic drives. The Alpine Inn in Hill City has German food for lunch and steak ( and only steak) for dinner. We stayed a week and could have spent another week there! Red Lodge, MT was also a nice area to spend 3-4 days. Nice tourist town and some great roads to explore in the area. If you stop near Badlands NP make sure to visit the Minuteman Missile National Historic site. They take 6 people per tour to a off site location to visit a decommissioned launch site - really interesting! The Grand Tetons also worth a week - lots of good hiking in the area.
Have a wonderful trip and see you at the rally!

Cody to Buffalo WY - take 16 over the Big Horns -Its a great, scenic drive, and it is NOT difficult. Some long uphills/downhills but the road is excellent -just take your time, stop often to see the views (lots of turnouts).
Spend a couple of days in Buffalo - Little Big Horn Battlefield and Fetterman Massacre Site are a short day trip up the Interstate from Buffalo. Hotel (names slips my mind) downtown has a nice bar and lots of history/atmosphere.
Then continue on 16 into Custer SD. Easy drive through Thunder Basin Grasslands. My favorite CG in Custer is Big Pine. Just west of town, large, nice level shaded sites in pine trees on the side of hill. Easy in/out. Very close to Custer State Park, Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Keystone. Easy day trips to Badlands, Deadwood, Sturgis. Plan on at least a week in this area.

Sturgis
If you are going by Mount Rushmore, I suggest a stop in Sturgis. A fun little town. Just outside of town is Fort Meade. It is now an open National Guard facility. Fort Meade is where the 7th Calvary was stationed before going to the Little Big Horn and it is where the survivors returned. They have the 7th Cav. museum there. The Little Big Horn museum was a bit of a disappointment to us on an early trip, but the Fort Meade museum is the real stuff.
