Hello from Illinois
Hi, friends, I haven't met yet.
My husband and I are excited to be joining your community. We just brought out 2019 Flagstaff 228D home yesterday from the dealer.
I'm no stranger to pop-up campers. I practically grew up in one between the ages of 8 and 16. My husband, on the other hand, has never camped in one.
We are stoked to get out on our first trip with the dogs next weekend.
If there are any other Illinois camper here, I'd love any recommendations on campgrounds. Most places around me seem to be seasonal RV sites anymore and I don't want to be sandwiched between two giant RVs. Something a little more secluded would be awesome.
Thanks in advance for all the help this community is going to give me.

Hello and welcome from Chicagoland. Unfortunately, I cant recommend a nearby campground that matches your description but following this thread to see other recommendations.
I can say, stay away from Hidaway Lakes in Yorkville.
Big Rock Campground in, you guessed it, Big Rock Illinois, is usually very quiet. Sites are large but no shade. Also, no showers, which might be important when camping in a popup.
I would say most campgrounds are a mix of seasonal and non seasonal, but that doesn't help with being sandwiched in between larger rigs.

Hi,
Not sure from your post where exactly you are, but if you are in the Chicago west area ...
Shabbona State Park has a variety of sites that might work for you, although Big Rock and Paul Wolff in the Kane County system are pretty nice. Headed to Big Rock myself tomorrow...
There is an entire nicely wooded loop at Shabbona that is unsuitable for most big rigs. That's where you might have your best luck.
Enjoy!!!

On a first trip I'd recommend a commercial campground like a KOA or a Jellystone. You'll spend the weekend checking out the camper, anyway, so the scenery and stuff isn't a priority, like it will be later. The power will work, the water will work, the bathroom and the showers will work and they will have a basic campground store. You can make a list of all the stuff you forgot and want to add for real adventures to come.

You don't say how far away you want to go or what kind of things you want to do, but here some we've been to:
Well, there's Rock Cut State Park, of course. Good for a shake-down; you can go home and pick up whatever you may have forgot -
If you don't want folks on top of you, you're going to be mostly constrained to state parks.
Another close one for shake-down is Blackhawk Valley CG on the Kishwaukee River east of the airport (I used to live 1/2 mile from it, but never stayed there, so can't comment on quality).
If you like (or don't mind) KOA's, there's a really nice one in Milton, WI at Lake Koshkonong. Another in Lena, IL. Both about an hour away. There's another one at Deforest, WI just north of Madison. (DW likes KOA's, if you haven't figured that out. If you have kids, they always have stuff for them to do.)
We've also been to Breezy Hill CG south of Fond du Lac, WI. Nice place.
If you like tubing, Wolf River CG in New London, WI is OK. Gets a bit crowded on weekends, though.
No list would be complete without mentioning Fort Wilderness at Disney World. Very nice place. Stayed there with our popup many moons ago.

Blackhawk Valley CG on the Kishwaukee River is a nice clean well maintained park.
Devil's Lake State Park in Wisconsin is only a couple hours drive and well worth the trip.

Thanks for all the welcomes and campsite advice everyone!
We are in Rockford but are willing to go just about anywhere. We will be going to Rock Cut this weekend, it's close to home. This way we can get her out of the driveway but not be too far away for our first time out.
You guys are pretty awesome here!

Welcome! I'm from Granite City IL (across Mississippi from St Louis). I don't know how far south you're interested in going, but there are several COE campgrounds at Carlyle Lake and Rend Lake. We've camped at both. Also, Giant City State Park in Makanda (near Carbondale) and Murphysboro State Park have nice campgrounds.

I see you are from Rockford. We call Roscoe home and have a seasonal at Pine County in Belvidere. We loved tent camping at Hononegah forest preserve and they have sites but they may not have electrical hook ups according to their website (normally has). Rock Cut can get a little loud and rowdy at least when we camped there.
