just retired and now this
Howdy
I was looking forward to hooking up my 21 foot toy hauler and seeing as many state parks and national parks as I could.
Now this .....tire blowout on recent trip: unexpected damage
Fortunately, close to home and not out in the middle of no where.
I am optimistic that I will be on the road soon.
Forest River Salem FSX 181RT Toy Hauler (2019)
Replace those tires from the manufacturer; I wish I had known this sooner.
Look at your wheel wells; get 'em reinforced if needed.
Forest River will not offer any resolution, because it is beyond the warranty date. (I am still in discussion with them.)
I am still planning on living my dream despite the set back.
Frank
PS Sorry, in my preview, I do not know how to correct the orientation of the photos.

buy some more sturdy tires up a load D from C or E from D
I like goodyear Endurance
if tires don't blow they don't destroy the wiring...
tires supplied are minimum from the factory

Hi and Welcome to FRF.
Just a few questions.
I'm confused by this statement:
"Forest River will not offer any resolution, because it is beyond the warranty date. (I am still in discussion with them.)"
If you bought it used, there is no warranty. If you bought it new, the warranty is only for one year and your RV is 5 years old.
Not sure where FR is required to provide resolution.
What am I missing?

Unless you have an extended warranty on those five year old tires, you're not going to get any payment. Tires fail. Our friends had the tread come off a 3 year old Goodyear tire while driving down the road. The TPMS didn't even come on because the tire didn't lose pressure.
As advised, getting a higher load tire will probably help in the future.
Have fun on your future travels. We did the same thing when we retired. We hit as many National Parks and National Historical Monuments as we could and had a great time. The only thing we regret is not taking more time at each location.
Welcome to the forum!

If you have full coverage insurance it will pay for all of the damage- just not a new tire. That’s most definitely NOT a warranty issue.

Welcome to the forum !!
Sorry for your damage, as you learned the hard way, trailer tires should be replaced after 5 years. Not sure how you thought this was a Forest River issue.
Good Luck with your repairs. As was mentioned if you have full insurance coverage use it.

Welcome to the forum. I would have been changing out 5 year old tires no matter what the mileage is. A good choice for tires is good year Endurance. I have had them on two campers and I also used a TPMS system. Later RJD

100 Percent agree. I had good year endurance on my first pull behind. 10000 miles on the tires before I traded it in for my 2022 Rockwood 2891BH. My Rockwood came with Goodyear Endurance. I have 12500 + miles on these.

My TH came with the Westlake E rated tires and always looked under inflated at full pressure. I upgraded to G rated tires after a blow out and I could not be happier.
I went with the Sailun S637 ST and saved a lot of money over the Goodyear.

Thank you for the recommendations on tires and the encouragements.
I am just really disappointed in the construction of the trailer. I was under the impression that a wheel well should with stand a blow out. Thoughts?
(And, I agree, it is not a warranty issue per se, it is inferior design and construction, which is a safety issue.)
I hope to be on the road soon and living the dream. (I hope to learn more from this forum.)
Safe travels to all.

Wheel wells do NOT contain a tire failure in just about every trailer I have any experience with.
I have seen a violent tire failure (as some experts do not like the term blowouts tear out a 2x10 plank and the layer of 1/8" steel plate above it on our HD flatbed.
Granted, RVs have absolutely no protection in that area, so damage is usually incurred during a tire failure at speed.

I think that having a wheel well survive a blow out depends on the type of blowout.
Blow outs can take out more than a wheel well. Friends had a blowout that took out their black water tank and other things on the bottom of the trailer that were rather expensive and it took months to get it repaired.

My DH changes out our tires every 4 years regardless of how many miles on them. Being TT tires they age differently with sidewalls the issue, not the tread; plus weather and sitting is what does them in. Used to think he was throwing away good $$$ but every post out here over the years has keyed me in to the fact that he might be a keeper (celebrating 22 yrs this week & he retires next year so travel FINALLY out of FL with our TT will take precedence....)

I'm a big believer in upgrading the Load Range on trailer tires. Since I did that on all three of my trailers 6 years ago, I haven't had a flat. Speed rating is also worth checking. One of the pluses for the Endurance is that it has an 88 mph speed rating. Most trailer tires now are 81 mph.

In every vehicle I have purchased including RV, the tires come with their own warranty from the tire manufacturer. They are typically prorated based on tread wear, and are limited by age and miles. I have not seen that RV manufacturers warrant tires and I wouldn't think they would want to touch the subject. I would think if OP has any claim it would be with the tire manufacturer.

This " pigheaded Dutch selfdeclared tirepressure specialist" would like to calculate if tires where sufficiant, so if to low pressure used was the cource.
Need tirespecifications and TT specifications for that.
Tires:
1. Maxload or loadindex
2.kind of tire to determine the maxloadpressure
3, speedcode and if ST to determine for wich speed maxload is given.
Sizes would be handy to and what pressure used.
From TT. ( please explain toy hawler to this ignorant Dutch guy)
1. GAWR('s) and GVWR
2. Howmany axles.
3,. WDH used.
4,. If ever done weighing, real weights.
Treath separation is often courced by overheating, but can take years before the beginning cracks have torn that far that treath separates.

Since this is a totally different topics I sugest that you start your own thread(s)
Not sure what your questions are......
Toyhaulers...................
1. Stay within gross vehicle capacity. Number / capacity of axles / capacity of axles plus tongue weight should be close to gross vehicle weight.
2 1 to 3 axles depending on design and capacity.
3. WDH used yes.
4. Like any other camper, weigh on CAT loaded.
Buy tires for trailer fully loaded. At least at minimum less tongue weight.

My questions are totally ontopic, topicstarter had treathseparation, wich often is courced by to low pressure for the load and speed used on tire.
So to determine if to low pressure or insufficiant tires wher used on TS TT, calculation of needed pressure and if enaugh reserve in the tires, is needed, and for that I need the data asked.
But mayby you can make me wiser in advance about what is specific on a toy hauler.

You should start your own topic on your toy hauler. Instead on going off topic here. Your questions have nothing to do with the OPs blowout which is in the welcome mat thread.
You will get more responses .
But basically nothing is that different about a toy hauler over a travel trailer or 5th wheel.
