AC ceiling registers not staying open....

2010 Flagstaff; AC ceiling vents don’t stay open without an attractive clothespin..
When I shop for replacements, nothing comes up to fit what I have:
The cover pops off with a screwdriver revealing a 4 3/8” opening in a 6 1/4” base; the collar of the register that pops into the base is shallow...only 3/8”.
Everything I’m finding are 4” or 5” openings with much deeper collars which in my case would greatly restrict air flow...?
Please help if you can...I’d like them to have dampers.

If you can't find anything new you might contact some of the RV salvage yards they may have what you are looking for just an idea.

Try D&W Inc. They have several different sizes and styles of registers.

If yours is like mine I have a center AC that runs through vents to everywhere else and the other 2 AC’s just vent right out the cover, but both types had this same annoying problem. The plastic vent diffuser you can adjust submits to gravity rather than the friction that’s supposed to keep it in place. Mine actually have a tiny raised portion of the plastic that’s intended to provide enough friction against the walls of the area the diffuser pops into. That raised portion doesn’t keep it in place though. I never tried clothes pins, but used tape at first to hold them open which wasn’t a real solution.

I ended up popping the vents out and building up that raised portion with some two part epoxy, just enough so it was a little tight when trying to turn the vents. Let the epoxy dry before you put the vents in or they’ll just be glued in place and not adjustable. If you accidentally put too much epoxy on you can sand it down to just right.

Take the register down and pop a small (really small) o-ring on one of the stub shafts of one of the vanes.

I like that idea even better, quick and easy and I have no shortage of o-rings laying around.
