Added flag pole - looking for opinions

And I know we all have them!

I bought a flag pole and a couple flags that I want to display when we're camping (USA & USN). The pole I bought is the collapsible aluminum type and it came with a plastic sleeve. I bought a Valtera flange and mounted that to my bumper and now the plastic tube can be placed into that fitting and removed so it isn't just standing at attention on the bumper when I'm towing the TT.

The pictures show how I plan on mounting it when we're camping - pole goes in the sleeve, pipe insulator protects the pole & ladder and the bead bungees hold the pole against the ladder. This seems robust enough to prevent the wind from doing any damage but if others have tried this and had bad results, I'd like to know.

I am also thinking about putting some sort of cable/lanyard on the pole to lock it to the ladder for theft proofing. Maybe that's overkill - any thoughts on that (I hate losing things but I hate looking like I'm paranoid

Nice job. I would not worry about it walking.

A pair of clamps like this can be used to secure a capped piece of EMT (Conduit) to your ladder as a socket for your flag pole.

These clamps are used to secure a TV antenna mast to solid piping, often the power mast on a house.

Don't forget that proper flag etiquette means it comes down at night if no lighting. Further, "The United States Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, states: "The flag should not be displayed on days when the weather is inclement, except when an all-weather flag is displayed"

All-weather flags are usually Nylon, don't hang like a wet rag when it rains, and don't fray or rip (as bad) when the wind really gets to blowing.

(Your post has reminded me that a flag pole is on my "to-do" list I think I'll weld a piece of flat plate on the end of a pipe, the plate long enough to fit under my tongue jack leg and then bungee the pipe to the frame for more stability. Painter's pole for the mast.

Larry, I think it's wonderful you've gone through so much trouble to display your flags. Mike, good reminder of flag etiquette. Drives me nuts when people ignore proper etiquette. Even if they mean well. If you really mean well, you observe etiquette and don't drive me nuts!

On the other hand, maybe I should thank them for the inspiration because our Toronto Blue Jays won the World Series after this insult.

Wow, when I saw that pic this morning, my jaw dropped and my 2nd thought was that HAS to be a photo edit...then I looked it up, because I never heard of it (I was busy finishing college and getting ready to get married back in 1992). Here is a good article from the point of view of Marines that had to go to Canada for the next game for color guard detail! https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news...ticle12901837/

Thanks for the link, Kris. I don't recall ever seeing a story about how those Marines in Atlanta unfortunately got it so wrong. I'm sure they were beside themselves with remorse. They are forgiven (but not forgotten).

Looks very nice and solid. I also fly the USA and USN flags and occasionally the "It's 5:00 Somewhere Parrot Flag".

I mount my flagpole by using two stainless steel, rail-mount fishing rod holders. They fasten directly to the upright tubes of my rear ladder. I drilled out the bottom of one of the holders, and mount it a few feet above the one still with a bottom. My pole consists of a 22-foot long trolling outrigger that comes in 6 separate threaded sections. I rigged the top-most section with an eyelet so I could thread my rope through from the bottom, which allows me to raise and lower the flag(s) without dismantling the pole. These items are easy to find at nearly any reputable fishing tackle shop.

We go to South Texas for a couple of months and proudly display our national colors. I don't get any flak from out Canadian friends down there from this (60% of Winter Texans are Canadian!).

1) The flag is not frayed. The tree branches are making it look that way.

2) It is an all weather flag that flies at night with a spot light.

Thanks for the link... that is a GREAT story. Of course, the fact that I grew up in Buffalo and am still a (long suffering) Bills fan probably influences me somewhat!

Now, I am thinking about a flag for the camper too... good thread, once we get the camper in the spring I will have to come back to it for ideas. A holder on the rear ladder probably makes the most sense.

Thanks to all for the comments & compliments. This was intended to be sort of an economy version since our budget is limited and the poles from Camping World were in the mid $100's. I started searching and found this pole from WalMart and it came with a 3" plastic pipe that is intended for a base buried in the ground.

I found that a Valtera fitting was just a tad small on the ID so I bought it and opened up the ID to make a snug fit for the pipe and mounted it to the bumper. The pipe insulation is something I always have around as well as the bead bungees so no added expense there. When I take down the flag, I pull the pipe out and all that is left is the Valtera fitting on the bumper - everything else is stored in the pass thru.

Total out of pocket was a shade over $70 including the flags. For all those that mentioned flag etiquette, yes, we will be observing that. However, since I get lazy sometimes (or maybe we just stay out late) I'll probably buy a solar flag pole light in the near future. Any recommendations on that?

this is how we mount our antenna pole, very easy and not expensive, ... I have two of the spring clamps mounted on the ladder, on the lower support and the upper support, ... the clamps hold the 24' pole without any problem, ... and it snaps out when its time to take it down, ... couldn't be any easier, ...

I have done something similar to what you did. I had a NASCAR flag pole kit that came with a base that you put your tire on and then put the flag pole into the base. I kept the base and now insert a 25 ft aluminum flag pole into it and then affix the pole to my latter on the camper with zip ties. Works grate. Later RJD

fella10 - I like your spring clips but I don't think they make them large enough to hold the pole I bought - it's about 2 3/4" in diameter at the bottom. I'll keep my eyes open though and see what's out there.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Flagpoles

I added two of the cheap aluminum brackets to the A frame and just put the flags on poles there. Works great for less than $20

One question. Do the waving flag(s) transmit rattling sounds throughout the RV? I have a serious case of OCD! :-)
