Auxiliary Fuel Tank

Thought I would start a thread on my auxiliary fuel tank setup on my new Silverado 3500. I ordered a ATI 46 gallon tank which comes with the gravity feed hookup. This tank is literally the only one I could find that fit both under my tonneau cover as well as in front of my B&W companion.

I have used gravity flow before but wanted to come up with something to transfer on the fly with some filtration as well as a small pump. I built this today which will bolt up under truck near filler neck. The filter is a 2 micron racor fuel water separator rated at 26 gph. The pump is a facet 12v which also has a positive shut off built in eliminating an additional solenoid. I plan to wire the pump into my existing up fitter switch already in the truck. The pump only pulls 1 amp so small draw.

The racor filter is pretty cool in that it has quick connects. When it it needs changing the entire filter assembly snaps out of the mount and is tossed.

Still waiting on the tank to arrive to do install but will post more pics and report on how well it functions. Only downside is the 26 gph but that should be sufficient to keep up with demand while towing to move fuel.

I have a Silverado 3500 SRW and I have a B&W hitch and I have a 100 gallon fuel tank between the hitch and front of truck. I had a 2500 Silverado before with a cover and the tank fit under the cover. It has a 12 volt pump, I got someone to build it for me. It works great, I stop and we use the bathroom and get a snack and I fill up the truck and I'm back on the road.

I like your pump setup. I'm going to look into something like that. My gravity fill has a backflow check valve where it splices into the filler tube and the check valve sticks shut. Irritating!
I also have a 60 gallon tank than I have sitting on a frame so I can slide lumber under and I can get the tonneau rolled closed on mine. (pic) I would have thought you could go bigger than a 46.

Yeah I would have thought so to. My new truck has a standard box so I only have 18 inches from back of bed to companion legs. I also only have 20 inches or so in height to tonneau. Lots of tanks look like they would fit except most don't include the fill cap height which can add 3 inches. Should be a good set up just need or tank to come in....

This is a picture of what I did, I had this tank made in 2008. It's made from steel painted black. I could have made it from aluminum but it would have cost more. It was made for a 2500 Silverado standard bed. I had to cut the bottom corners out to fit the wheel wells so the tank would sit level in truck. I had a hard cover over the bed as I was pulling a travel trailer. It holds 100 gallons. It makes for easy filling up, I never visit a truck stop. I can buy diesel cheaper somewhere else.

Finished up my install. Everything is working well. Pump is a little louder then I thought but oh well. Only issue was getting the fuel line down through the bed. Not much room and once I drilled the hole I quickly found out it was smack dab in the middle of another support below resulting in 2 holes. Really no choice the hose has to go down in that location. Pretty slick in that I brought the pump wiring up into the truck and over to the upfitter plow light switch on center console. I can now transfer fuel on the fly. Pump has positive shut off so siphon if I leave the ball valve on the tank open. I will say the quality on the ATI tank is very nice!
