back up camera problem

After working great for 4000 miles on our first trip in our "new" MH.... The back up camera screen went black 25 miles from home. My first exclamation was "the car is gone!!" ... Luckily it was still there ... But the camera image is not. Trying to trouble shoot, I have checked wiring on camera and around monitor... Disconnected and reconnected the cables there. Not sure what else to check. This is a "Pyle View" rearview monitor. . . Perhaps installed by previous owners? Owners manual has no trouble shooting instructions.

Also found a fuse marked "monitor" in the fuse box, but it looks ok.

I believe that would be an aftermarket backup system. Also, what fuse box are you talking about with the fuse labeled monitor? If it is fuse location 2 in the breaker box, it is for the monitor panel in the coach, not the monitor for a backup system.

Ah... That makes sense... the monitor panel. So, not sure how to check power connection for backup camera... Or perhaps there is something else to check?

So, I guess we first need to figure out if it is the monitor or the camera that quit working.... Perhaps find a way to test the monitor screen..it would be easy to remove but not sure what to do then? How would you testy the camera? I'm hoping it is not a problem with the wiring between the two as I can't imagine how to trouble shoot that.

Can you hook up the camera directly to the monitor? This would check to see if it's the wire between the 2 devises is ok. You may also be able to use the video out of a video camera to test the monitor if you have one, I'm not sure it will work but it's worth a try.

I can take the monitor off (it clips to the rearview mirror) but I am not sure about powering it..it has a single cable connector. I assume this connects to the camera. Where does the power come from?

Most systems have a small box (multiplexer) that provides power to the monitor and camera as well as providing a place where the camera picture is sent to the monitor. You could follow the wire from the back of the monitor to where this box is. Make sure all connectons are tight. i would do a little research on your exact model, and then follow the cableing from monitor to camera to ensure all connections are correct.

Ok... Found the little box.. Black and red wires and a little cylindrical fuse. fuse wire looks ok. Red wire is supposed to be power. Connections along the way all removed and reconnected. Still nothing. Not sure how to test for power. Red wire has strange folded region with "18-20 amps" stamped in plastic coating... Not sure if this is another fuse or how to check it. Anything else I can check?

That is simply an inline fuse. I was talking about the picture cable. Where does it go from the monitor? I would follow it from the back of the monitor to wherever the next connection is made. If you do some research online about your exact system, you should be able to find a schematic of the wires inside the cable, or maybe call the company and ask about the system, try to get some kind of schematic, so you know which wires do what.

I found a schematic in the manual. A yellow cable connection to the camera ... It was connected. That and the ground and 12v red are the only connections before it hooks to the monitor.

Does the monitor turn on and off? If not I would check the voltage on the red wire before and after it enters the black fuse box. If it does power on and off, then I would check the continuity of the yellow line from where it connects to the camera and the monitor. Is it a yellow RCA plug cable? Sometimes the connection inside the plug itself comes loose and that would prevent a picture from gettign to the monitor.

can you get a picture with the red wires not crossing over each other? Also where does the purple wire(tied in with 2 reds and yellow/red stripe) go?

Purple wire goes down behind plastic edging by hood release. Checking the black and red wires that attach to the black RCA cord from the monitor (connected to yellow video feed) ...discovered the black write not connected to anything (not sure if overlooked or new condition) ... So we poked that wire into the inline fuse... Resulting in smoke when turned to acc.!. Obviously not the right connection but does seem to indicate power source is working in some wire! Can't seem to get a volt meter to work for me... Continuing to work on that.

Wiring diagram and info in manual.
The black wire needs to go to chassis ground? Not sure where to put it.

Was just going to say you have power...the black wire is your ground and without that attached to a grounding point, you will get nothing. Hopefully by attaching that to a ground point, your system will begin working again. make sure you didn't blow the fuse when you shorted black wire on it
