Bed Mod

Hey there

I have a 2014 DBud. The bunks are situation in the single over double configuration.

Kids are getting bigger and I want to make the top bunk a double to match the bottom.

I took the trim off the bunk and the top panel of luan and it is 2x2 construction. There appears to be 2 2x2s laminated together on the edge that the piece of trim that is padded was attached to.

There appears to be 3 studs on the wall between the bathroom and the bunks as there are staples on the wall holding the wall covering on.

My plan is to build a ladder shaped add on and glue and screw it to the exising 2x2 construction and then screw nail it on to the 3 (we will call them) studs between the bunks and the bathroom. Right now there is only 3 walls that support the bunks. I figure adding the additional screws into 3 studs will provide enough support as well as gluing and screwing to the existing frame work that is there? Any thought people?

I will post some pics of the progress this far soon.

I don't see any issues with your thought process. I would try to identify any studs along the wall on the side closest to the floor and screw the side onto that wall as extra support.

I don’t quite follow. Identify studs along the wall side closest to the floor. Can you clarify

The wall on the top of your picture. I would mount the new section to the edge of the existing bed frame and also identify all studs both at the head, foot and the side that you have that half wall and get screws through your new frame into each one of them. Then you can put the big kid up there without worrying about its weight capacity being enough.
