Buzzing Progressive EMS

Hi All,

I just installed a hardwired 50 amp Progressive EMS into my Georgetown. Whenever this bugger connects it makes a big click noise and then a continuous audible buzzing noise that I can even hear in the bedroom above it. Is this normal?

I had the same problem with mine when I first installed it. I called tech support and they told me the contacts(?) needed to wear in and to plug/unplug it multiple times. Sure enough the buzzing went away after a short time. The click noise never goes away but only occurs once at first when you hook up to power.

Their tech support is great. Give them a call and they will tell you how to fix it or make it right.

After the thunk when it kicks on mine makes a bit of a 60hz hum. Only really noticable if you're in the room near the cabinet and nothing else in the trailer is running. I've never considered it an issue.

I have worked with the types of contactors which are used in the hard-wired EMS for years. They are the same type used as motor starters for electric motors. One problem I have come across is that sometimes during assembly or shipping one of the contacts may get out of alignment and cause the buzzing.

As stated elsewhere, shutting off/ turning on the breaker at the pedestal several times can fix the problem.

If not, turn off the pedestal breaker, disconnect the power cord and open up the EMS cover. Inside you will see a arc cover with the label on it held on by 2 screws.

This covers the 2 (30amp) or 3 (50 amp) contacts. Remove the screws and look at the contacts. If any one of the contacts is not laying in there square (pic #3), that is the offending contact.

Using a small screwdriver you can get it turned so it makes a good connection when energized. Be sure the silver button is facing the correct way, you do not want it to look like the one in pic #4. If you get it the wrong way, you will have to push down on the square button in the middle of the holder so you can flip it over 180*.

Make sure that you don't lose or damage the small spring that holds the contact in position. Also, when putting the arc cover back on tighten the screws snug, do not over tighten.

Pics: 1) Arc cover, 2) normal contacts, 3) 1st contact not in correct position, 4) silver contact button facing wrong direction.

Installed same unit in my 2306 a couple months back. I actually recorded the noise. And it was noisy.....then after a short time the buzzing went away. Im happy with the unit now, works great with the charging wizard remote.

charge wizard remote is a completely different topic. best to start a new thread about it. fyi, it is a remote fob that is part of the progressive dynamics converters. go to their website for an explanation

I have read on here that progressive recommends not to mount against a flat surface. Others have put a few washers between the casing and wall as spacers and the hum doesn't resonate thru the wall. Especially with 50a unit.

I didn't see that in my instruction booklet. Mine is screwed down on the floor. I can understand how you may get vibration if you mount it to the thin wall and haven't a firm backer behind it. As thin as the walls are it wouldn't take much bouncing around on the roads to have the screws work loose.
