extra propane

I use a propane fuels generator to camp and BMX races. It is a Flagstaff Microlight 25FKS. I am trying to move as much weight onto the tongue to offset the weight of the generator on the back of my trailer. I have two 30# cylinders mounted on the tongue from the factory to fuel the camper, I have the spare tire mounted inside the A frame of the tongue and I am thinking of mounting 2 20# cylinders for transport to fuel the generator. I am below the GVW of the camper but looking for ideas on how to mount the two cylinders.

First I’d look under the trailer and see if you have a spare outlet in the propane distribution manifold. If so then I’d run an extension off of that with a quick connect to the back of your rig and run the genny that way. Then carry spare propane on your tow vehicle.

With the amount of propane I go thru I would be concerned using the main onboard propane. Using the 20# bottles I can run to a local convenience store to get one if needed.

Has anyone use one of these mounts made by Stonewell bodies?

Put a 100# bottle in your truck. Add a fitting and run a hose from that bottle to your trailer. Unload it when you can at the site. Leave it in your truck when you can.
I'm not sure if there are rules against how much propane a TT can have on it.

The OPs original is to offset the loss of tongue weight by having the generator on the rear of the rig. They make a over the tongue rack for generators/ anything else you want to put there might be an option for the extra propane bottles. JMHO

I now have mounts made for mounting the propane cylinders on the tongue. My next question is should I drill and tap frame for mounts or should I clamp the mounts to the tongue?

I'm am not a fan of drilling holes in frame members especially on the tongue. I think I would weld or clamp them. JMHO

Just a reminder - proper weight distribution to reduce instance of trailer sway ISN'T just limited to a target tongue weight of 10-15% of the tt weight. It's about intelligent loading of the trailer, and concentrating weight where your trailer is most properly equipped to deal with it.

The following video is invaluable to watch all the all way through:

You have to balance all forces, but it's best if that tongue weight comes from central massing, as opposed to dead weight located as far forward as possible.

Lots of people have seen videos like this, this one - however, is a LOT more sophisticated. I recommend you watch it all the way through. This one is a BRILLIANT demonstrator for weight, distribution, speed, slope, etc. Really a must-watch to show all the things that are missing from that "rear loading is bad" demos.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled forum.

I am leaning towards clamping. Was just looking for a second opinion. Does anyone make clamps for sale or am I stuck fabricating clamps too?

Without a picture of the mounts, it's pretty difficult to point you in the right direction. If I remember correctly, our trailer had a mount like this which had a long rod that extended under the tongue, like this https://www.amazon.com/RVMATE-Propan...9904586&sr=8-4
