Home built extendable drying arm for RV ladder

On our first Shakedown campout a few weeks ago, we found that we had no means to dry our swim suits or towels.piputting up a clothesline was forbidden within the campground. I looked online to see what was available after we returned and found nothing that suited me. So I decided to build something of my own design. This is what I came up with:

After seeing one on a neighbors rig at a campground, we got one of these. They offer 3 sizes. Very easy to put on and take off the trailer. I don't leave it on the trailer when moving. DW loves it.

Yes.

Yes, I saw those and read the reviews, many complaints of rusting as the arms are plated steel. However, I think the design is brilliant and one source of inspiration.

Mine are 3 years old. Still look like new.

Nice job and excellent craftsmanship.

Obviously you have machining/fabricating equipment and experience.
While not something the typical R/V owner will be able to duplicate easily, maybe YOUR design will inspire others too.

Excellent!

Wow! That’s good to hear. We live in FL where the air is salty on the coast and the humidity is normally high. I assumed the reviews I saw would definitely apply to me, hence the build of my own. Besides, during this time of Social Distancing, why not?
Thank you for your input.

Been using this for 10 years and no problems.
Just clamp it to the ladder.

Very nice! I have a wooden one that DH made years ago. Always rewarding to have something useful that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.

I also saw these online, but again the reviews were not promising. So happy to hear that this device works well for you. Ten years is definitely a great recommendation, to say the least!

All the best!

Shady Maple RV sells an Amish made wooden version of this drying rack for a pretty inexpenisve price. No rusting! Don't have a photo, unfortunately. Maybe Scot can post one.

i had one of the rusty arm units - i contacted stromburg and they said there was a batch where the plating was not up to snuff (). sent out new rails free of charge - but ruined some whites with the rust from the old ones. survived last summer - well see how they are this season - when it starts.

Interesting, I’d like to see that! Also, good to support a cottage type industry if Amish produced.

X2^... everyone one of those I’ve seen in Florida are rusted. I was going to get one until I read the reviews and started checking them on other RVs. Don’t need rust on my Speedo..lol

Not sure if it is what the poster referred to or not?

SUPER!!!!

Nicely done! I love the streamline/compactness of it. Looks professional and sturdy. A++ for the workmanship and the innovation.

Yeah you can go out and buy something that would do the job but nothing like letting your mind and skill run free and make it on your own. NICELY done sir!
