Cleaned up the table legs a bit...

Before, after...(after, before?)...

Table and re-covered dinette cushions, bumperettes, etc. installed...

Started cleaning up the perimeter of the frame, a bit...

Sanded off all the loose rust..

A couple of coats of POR-15 paint...

...more to come...

Bought 5 new GY Endurance tires, 4 new rims, and decided to blast and re-paint an original rim for a spare tire...

Decided to invest in a set of these...

Of course, I had to drill out the holes .032" larger...

New tires/wheels...

So...as you can see, I did not install the original plastic center caps. Reason being is that I bought a set of trim rings/center hubs to dress things up a bit...

I started installing the first one, but suddenly realized that the way that those rings retain themselves is to bite into the fresh paint of the rim right down to the bare steel of the rim.....

So, without even finishing the first ring install, I canned the idea, and will be sending that kit back.

Here's a pic of the scratches..

So, I didn't go back and install the original caps. The lug nuts were all torqued to 120 ft. lbs. and I didn't feel like un-doing everything.....

...more to come...

We also installed some new awning material. After reassembling everything, the spring lock latch wasn't working.

So, drilled out the pop rivets again to bring the Right Side spring assembly into the shop to take a look...

The aluminum ratchet gear was worn down...

I turned the wheel around, and it worked pretty good, but for $57.00, I decided to buy a brand new RH side...

Turned around...

Here's a comparison...the new part seems superior to the original part.

The gear is more aggressive, and the locking latch lever is larger...

The original spring diameter...

The new spring diameter...

The new keeper is plastic, but seems way beefier than the original aluminum one. Plus...the new keeper has 2 different spring end tab slots that you can use.

One for the standard-duty application, and another slot for heavy-duty applications.

I used the standard-duty slot.

...more to come...

But, alas...nothing just flows smoothly...

As I went to pop rivet the new spring end cap onto the roller tube, something was preventing the cap from fully seating, on one end..

I read the instructions several times. There are different directions, depending on whether or not your roller tube has a "notch" in it. Mine does not...

So, because of these two little "tab things" in the rim...

I had to add a notch to the roller tube...

I thought about just burring out those 2 little tabs (like the instructions say to), but thought that adding a notch in the tube would be more "professional"...

Anyway...the awning is back on!! It has been off for almost a year...

A few other upgrades...

Stainless steel strap...

A new rear bumper tube wire thing (stainless steel, of course!)...

A few new toys...

Well, I think that's about it for now...

Rich

Thanks for the update Rich. Floor looks great. You will like the higher toilet, at least I like mine. Replaced the house toilets for "Comfort height" sometime back. Comparing you first photos to your latest, you would never guess they are the same 5er. Will be doing the blowmax change out myself soon. You have done an outstanding job.

Thanks, Pete. I must have missed your post when it first came out.....

Missed this post, too....I looked up "base shoe molding" after your first post. I didn't really notice the 1/2 x 3/4 stuff..mostly 3/3 x 3/4 stuff. That's what I ended up using.

Well....I ain't re-doing it!.....

Thanks. That was one reason why I took on this project. I figured that my new work would be done with a little more "care" than the factory construction. Maybe it will be a little less prone to some of the common complaints.

It has to be done before July!

I really thought about which toilet to get...original height, or taller height. Science proves that deeper squatting results in a more complete elimination ( research "Squotty Potty").

But, I figured that by the time I'm done with this resto project I'll be to broken down to squat that low.....

Remember...I'm a novice...what's the Blowmax change? (Taller toilet?? ).

Money-wise, about $5500.00 total, including the original purchase price.

Time-wise...I don't have a clue. Depending on the hourly rate, I'd say about $120K worth......

PUH-LEEZE....after this, I don't want to work on another camper, ever again!.....and yet, somehow, I feel as though this one will never be finished.

Thanks, John. You say "wow", and I've been saying "ow!"......

Just the other day while I was sanding the frame using a 4.5" grinder with a flap wheel on it, the wheel hit a bolt and the grinder kicked back and the fast spinning 80 grit wheel hit me right in the chin. Nice abrasion, there...

By the time your done you will probably have a sixth sense and know what problems may arise in the future. Great job. Hope to see you enjoying your 5er for other purpose than working on it.

Started reading this yesterday and just finished to current posts. I am glad I started when I did. I wouldn't have handled the suspense of waiting for updates. Amazing work. I've done facility and equipment maintenance for over 15 years and I know how "fun" that kind of stuff is to work on/replace. Nice to see you take your time with every repair and do it the best you can. That thing should last forever after you are done! Keep up the amazing work, it seems like the FR forums world is watching and waiting. Much respect.

I've always had the mindset that "just good enough" doesn't work for me. I'd rather go the extra mile and have more faith in the repairs.

The work near the end of the job is way more enjoyable than the beginning was.

Aw, shucks...I love this stuff so much,....well...just drop it off. I'll do it for free!! ...

Quick update...for the first time ever, I raised and lowered the newly installed awning.
Never having done this before, and having no instructions, I tried it going on guy instinct.

That didn't work out too well...but...thanks to Youtube, I pulled it off!

Also, I didn't have a pull-down hook/rod, so I made a stainless steel one...

Works like a charm!

Rich
