Microwave upgrade
Hi,
The original microwave in our Blue Ridge fiver died last week.
If you haven't looked recently, the prices for RV replacement microwaves is disheartening. Besides that. They no longer make the Magic Chef model the RV came with.
So after some research, I found a .9 cf
microwave/convection/air fryer at Walmart for under $100. It is suitable for the 20A breaker and maintains the required air circulation distance within the wall cubby.
And it fits using the original trim plate from the old unit. There is a half inch gap at the top that I left uncovered for better air circulation but it looks nice and works great.
There are a few things I had to rig.
1) I attached two rows of shims on the bottom of the microwave in order to raise it where it would accept the trim in the original mounting holes.
2) I had to literally cut the metal bands that held the trim on the front of the old microwave in order to separate the trim from the front of the unit.
3) the gap on the sides of the new microwave and the trim is about 1/4 inch. I used self stick super expanding foam weatherseal tape to fill the gap.
The tape slowly expands and makes a really strong grip between the microwave and the trim. NOTE: This area does not get hot enough to cause the weatherseal to melt or release fumes. But it is only cosmetic and can be left out.
NOTE: WE ARE PRETTY MUCH STATIONARY AND DO NOT INTEND TO MOVE THE RIG AGAIN. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT ANYONE ATTEMPTING THIS MODIFICATION FIND A WAY TO MORE SECURLY ANCHOR THE MICROWAVE IF YOU TRAVEL. WHAT I DID PROVIDES A GOOD SOLID MOUNTING FOR NORMAL USE BUT MAY JAR LOOSE IF THE RIG IS BOUNCED AROUND.
