Murphy Bed Sofa Mod

Here is our solution to getting under the sofa without taking panel down every time!
Cut the board in half, put hinges on it now we can acess our bins easily, we thought for 2 years how to make it easier to get under there and this is definitely the solution and easy! also installed a glass shelf under the tv to hold a small dvd player since our geneiss does not work consistently. It looks so nice, and I think we are finally done with our mods for a while!Click image for larger version

That is very clever. I love mods that look like they should have always been that way.

I have been thinking about putting hinges on the top of mine so that it lifts up. Do the panels swing open when in transit or is there a latch?

We put an L bracket on each door to catch the sofa frame and no they have not come open.

Murphy Bed Mod

Hi Again,

Sorry to bother you again, and your pics tell a fine tale on this mod. I have a couple of questions: What kind of hinges and closing devices did you use. I would expect you would have to install the hinges first before cutting the board in order that the two pieces line up after cutting. I plan to follow your example on this, so want to be sure before I start cutting. My record on these kinds of renos is not stellar.

Hi we used 2 tee brackets and we cut the board attached hinges replaced fabric then installed onto sofa using a spacer on floor when mounting to make sure they were same height hope that helps!

How did you originally remove the board from the bed with out wrecking anything? Was it just stapled in?

Awesome mod!!!

No our board just hung from the sofa seat rail with some u hooks so it just lifted off. This is the best mod we have done it has been so much easier to get to bins under sofa and has made it seem much more usable! Love it!

This is the mod I've been looking for! Thank you thank you thank you! We just discovered the board hangs from the front rail and thought pulling it off to load the bins was the berries. Your mod is awesome!
