RV Air Conditioner Silencer

Has anyone installed a silencer for your roof a/c?
I have a 2023 Freedom Express 192 RBS.

Would love to quiet this a/c down and was wondering if anyone has experience with one.

Thanks in advance.

I don’t really notice it but my wife has a hard time sleeping with the air on, even on low. So we suffer on warm nights with just the fantastic fan on 2 but no higher. Not so fantastic on 2 by the way-Ha
I will remain tuned in for any responses to your thread—short of leaving the wife at home!

We have the same camper and yeah, the AC is loud! We’ve learned to live with it, but will be watching for ideas.

Is it ducted? If so, check out: https://koolrv.com/

It takes the air blasting downward and channels it directly into the ducts. If you have the "dump" feature it will not work anymore but a friend who installed it in his fifth wheel said that not only is the noise reduced, the RV cooled down in ten minutes and it would have taken thirty minutes before.

Obviously, your mileage may vary.

Yeah it would be nice to actually hear the tv without turning it up loud enough that the neighbors can hear

Our a/c says it is “vented”. There are openings on all four corners of the a/c and one in the center..opening below

You need to provide more information.

Is it ducted a/c or non-ducted Blast from the Center a/c?

Make and model number of a/c.

If it's non-ducted, there's not much you can do to make it quieter. That's why we've only had RVs with ducted a/c. So much more quieter.

Just saw that posted while I was typing my post. It sounds like you have the non-ducted Blast from the Center a/c. Not much you can do, that I'm aware of, other than getting a RV with ducted air conditioning.

I followed your link, checked out the reviews and found my Coleman-Mach ducted unit is one they service.

Just ordered it for $84. Thanks for the info and link! I figure if it improves the efficiency as reported, that alone will mean the AC is not running as much. If it reduces the noise so much the better-and buy some peace from my wife-Ha.

Appears to be a simple and easy to install. Appreciate your post.

To get the maximum quietness (sounds like what you are after) you need to deaden the noise from the air intake. Most of the noise comes from the fan shredding the incoming air through the intake. The product you ordered will help some with the noise and greatly improve airflow I don’t think it will help enough with the sound. There is a product that has sound insulators in the intake and it’s as simple as replacing the cover. Check out this informative video from Chad (Changing Lanes). https://youtu.be/XI0IWt1lfhY?si=9CxyqeYfP7B4Nj0V

There is another thread on quieting non ducted A/Cs.
It (& the noise) inspired me to do similar.
I bought sound deadening panels and made a baffle that the cold air hit first and then deflected around to come out the unit vents. Basic sound meter phone app showed a 6 dB drop in noise. Not wonderful, but quieter with a more acceptable tone.
This was after sealing up gaps with metal tape and thin self stick sound absorbing material.
Of course, properly aligning and sealing the divider (hot/cold sides) made a big difference in cooling. The faster the cooling, the less you have to hear
For old time audio enthusiasts, I call the sound deflection quieting “the BOSE method”, for the same reason the sound was less tinny and smoother in a tabletop radio, folding the sound waves smooths out the harsher frequencies.

I'm just the opposite. I LIKE the noise our AC(s) make....both of them. I have real bad tinnitus. The noise from the A/C helps cover up some of the ringing in my ears and makes me sleep better. Our last campground was near a paper mill. They operated all night long. Folks in tents were complaining of the noise....couldn't sleep. Again, the A/C noise "came to the rescue". I slept like a baby........

I will admit the FEW times we ever watch TV while camping....the A/C noise can be annoying. But, thankfully....we go camping to be outdoors, so we seldom watch TV while camping.........and the few times in the Fall I want to watch a ballgame, I move one of the TVs outdoors and watch it under the awning.....with a campfire going nearby

I installed two on different trailers. The first one is when we had a 26 DBH Grey Wolf. And the second is on our current trailer, a Grand Design 1970 RL. I'm an audiologist so I have a sound level meter app on my phone. The silencer reduced the AC noise by about 6 dB. The number in decibels looks very small, but a 6 dB decrease translates into a 50% drop in perceived loudness. My wife and both have hearing loss. The the silencer, while not delivering a perfectly quiet environment, really helped both of us a lot.

Our trailer has a ducted 13.5K BTU system. I've made sure the ductwork is properly sealed to the unit and that the ceiling vents are properly sealed to the ductwork. Previously the original tape used for sealing was the cloth-based duct or duck tape. By using proper HVAC tape and sealing the system did improve air flow and reduce noise.

However, my observations are that RV systems are noisy, some more than others. These are nothing like home residential systems. Part of the noise is the fact they are roof mounted and will induce vibrations into the roof which is noise throughout the RV.

The use of certain chemical agents, legal ones, aids in a night's better sleep.
