Have never ripped them off in 7 yrs, bent the threaded rod holding them 3 times, but never lost anything. Gotcha - BUT - I would have lost them I think when I was getting 99 MPG while towing.

A forum towing MPG record I believe.

I bought mine at HD last summer. I must have gotten the last one, because I haven't seen them there since then, just the 4x4's, which are too small.

purchased what I need to install this mod.,,,,,but I'm just wondering. In the photos, I notice that everyone is placing a piece of "stock" in between the frame and the tube. Why that instead of mounting the tube right up against the camper's frame. I'm going to do mine exactly like the photos are shown here, but was just curious.

Brad,
It is because most of us have hard propane lines running down one side of the camper. By installing the stock on top, it gives you a space so the tube won't rub the line.

Upon further investigation, that is my case as well. So thanks for the "heads up" so that i could be looking for the line. Got them in though and it went smoothly. I wonder though,,,who actually thought this idea up? who ever did should be marketing this idea. It is a fantastic addition for sure. THANK YOU GUYS VERY MUCH!! I will be curious to see how long it takes for inquiries at the campgrounds.

You are more than welcome. It didn't take but about 30 minutes the first time I pulled into our CG for the weekend before someone asked about mine. Funny thing is, my two camping buddies have big toy haulers with little spaces for slinkies. Guess what is hanging under both of those campers now!! I found this mod when I bought my first 5th wheel in '10 and wanted to do it to that one but just never got around to it, but I did it on this one and wish I'd done it sooner. Fantastic mod. In fact, I liked it so much, I did a similar one with 6" round pvc tubes and conduit hangers. I use them to carry awning poles, fishing rods and rolled up wet mats when coming home. Very useful. If you look closely, you can see them mounted in front of the wheels.

I bought a 5 x 5 fence post at Home Depot over the weekend. I had to go to 2 stores and talk to manager to get one out of the cage in back of the store. You can go on line and check store inventory. If they are not on the shelves that is where you will find them!

Thanks to everyone's posts and Herks original post, like many before me, I have completed my install of the slinky storage compartment. I love it. Great ideas people. Always open for more. I have always kept my slinky in its original box and I have been looking for a good sanitary idea like this one for a long time. Thanks guys!

One question, how do you make sure the post does not move side to side or in and out? I have the anchor bolts down fairly tight but I didn't know if anyone used some method on anchoring the posts so thy don't slide in or our or side to side.

Friction holds mine solid in both directions.

I drilled holes in my metal brackets I fabed up, and then i ran 1/2" lath screws into the post, backed them out and then cut the tips off so they did not protude into the post.

Friction seems like it will hold, just wanted to make sure no one ran into an issue with taking a corner and tripping semi's or anything

I installed 1" hard rubber one sided weatherstripping on the top and bottom rail. It offers cushioning and keeps it from moving without having to almost crush the square column.
