surge supression for 50 amp service <$100

for those of u that would like to add surge suppression, but don't want to part with $275+, may want to consider this approach.
Eaton Cutler-Hammer makes a whole house surge suppressor chspmicro2 that becomes available from lowes or home depot from time to time. price is from $50 to $75. in addition, u will need a double pole type BR 15 amp breaker. make room in ur box so that the new breaker can attach to each hot leg. install the breaker, attach to it and that is it. the suppressor works even ur adapted to 110 v.

i did a quick wire in just to see if it would check ok before i did the final installation.

mounted and showing that it is active. i am adapted to 110V.

i'm slow and it took me abt an hour to install. most of that was spent rearranging breakers.
i believe i could have it out and put the old breakers back in in less than 30 min.

Jim, Could only one leg of that unit be powered for my 30 amp service camper? The other one would be capped and taped.

See anything wrong with that?

Thank you for sharing this Jim, it's exactly what I'm looking for! I am in Lowe's & HD often enough, hopefully I can snag one soon. I just did a 50 amp conversion in my TT, and need something like this.

i'm not sure if it can be used on one leg or not. i did ask if it could be used if both legs were at the same phase and the answer was yes. i have my trailer adapted to 110 v right now and both lights are lit. u may have to connect both wires to the same dedicated breaker (type BR) but it will work.

if u read the specs, they are impressive.

i see home depot has one now with free shipping. i don't remember if i bought from lowes or home depot but it had to be ordered. i watched for 4 months for them to be available. then they had only 3.

worse case, if ur unhappy with it in the trailer, u can put it in ur house.

it still recommends surge suppression at the computer etc. it's only meant to drop the surge enough where the wiring won't be damaged and a second suppressor can handle it.
i have the chspt2micro, it has 1890 joules total protection. i believe the chsptmicro had better ratings but this was all they had.

they (Eaton) make another version that is included in a breaker but i have never seen one advertised.
i had to put some 2 circuit 1 slot breakers in to free up space to install this. if that hadn't been possible, i believe i would have installed another small box ahead of my breaker box to accommodate the surgetrap (their trade name).
there is more info on Cuttler-Hammer's web site.

i believe it would work. i tripped each leg individually to see what the led's would display. it shows the leg tripped is not protected but checks out ok on the other.

i believe it would still work.
