tow vehicle engine generstor

Does any compnay make a generator kit that can be added to your vehicle engine to run a make it a generator also While idling. Yes i know thats not great for vehicle to idle but just looking at this idea. Why I ask is we tow with a van and it would be cool to run the air when we pull over for lunch, rest etc. since we have a van it would pain to carry around a generstor that would power up a 12000 btu unit if I pulled with a truck I would just put it in the bed but a few years away from that with four kids. The van is the best option right now.

I would think most alternators wouldn't hold up though, but maybe?

An inverter is actually a good idea. It could be added to the camper itself. One large enough to power the AC will definitely draw a ton of power off the battery. If you limit yourself to quick 1-2 hour stops max you could probably get away with a couple Group 31 deep cycle batteries. The charge wire from your TV would charge them back up while driving as well as helping a little at idle while stopped. Some type of transfer switch/relay would be necessary to prevent powering from shore and inverter at the same time. I have a bit of experience with inverters on boats for powering electric grills and even air conditioners. The systems and components are very similar. PM me if you have any specific questions.
