Welding in chassis: which precautions?

Hello all.

The beams/rails that support the watertank on my 2016 FR Legacy 340BH are bent and need replacement.

Which precautions should I take before welding on this motorhome?

Does it matter which type of welding? MIG vs TIG?

Some say to leave batteries connecties to protect circuits from power surge.

Others say: disconnect every connection which is nearly imposible...

Offcours I will make sure I have a good and bare metal ground connection near the welding area.

Will that do?

Any experience with this?

Thanks a lot.

I do not want to harm electronics in ECU and transmission...

Before doing any welding on the coach frame you might want to contact the manufacturer of the chassis. Many truck frames often have "NO DRILL, NO WELD warnings on them as they are heat treated.

Even if not, welding on a frame (again, if not prohibited) is more than just running a bead here or there and calling it good. You don't want to create stress risers that will eventually lead to cracking. Unless you are an accomplished welder and understand things like "hydrogen embrittlement" I'd first avoid welding to the frame or if you insist, have a professional welding shop do the work.

As for worrying about electronics, if the ground connector is close to the weld area, no issues at all with the electronics. Current will flow through the shortest path.

And Yes, I've had some experience with this

Ok. Thanks but do I disconnect earth from batteries OR is it better to just keep the batteries connected regarding power surge etc. .

Regards,
F.

Always disconnect positive battery cable from ALL batteries anytime you are welding on any modern vehicle.

Ground close to weld area no shore power I don't mess with batteries .make sure good clean ground . Have welded on many campers no problems . Boxed spring hanger in installed bumpers when they where over loaded and fell off ,repaired tank brackets ,replaced broken hitch .no problems with any of them . added brackets for their other mods .
