And the VW jokes have started

I just got a Volkswagen; saw the news when I got home.

I am fuming.

---------------------------------------

Thanks to Volkswagen I'm now even starting to doubt if Herbie was a true story.

---------------------------------------

Shareholders have told the directors of Volkswagen to personally improve their testing of fuel emissions.

It involves a closed garage door and a hose pipe.

VW has been the butt of "Check Engine Light" jokes for years.

They just don't seem to allocate enough of their R&D for emissions.

Au contraire... their solution seems to have been quite inventive.

Mine works fine no light 30 mpg and almost 50 yrs old no jokes here. Scary that an old car like this still runs and gets almost as good mileage as a new one.

I asked my friend if he could lend me a $100 till payday as it was my girlfriends birthday and I would like to get her a present.

"Yeah sure, I know you're good for it, should get a decent present with a $100. " He said.

"Yes, " I replied, "I'm going to get her a used Volkswagen Golf. "

I own one of said diesel cars, this is my 4th. The thing that ticks me off is that these cars, right out of the box (tampered emmission software included) are cleaner than 95% of the vehicles on the road--they emit less CO than comparably sized gas engines, and at times, more NOx emissions--which is what the EPA has decided to focus on here. Never mind that our TVs emit way more pollution than the TDI--lets focus on one aspect of one manufacturer to make them look bad. Now I'm going to be saddled with a software flash recall that's going to lower my power and MPG, not to mention my resale value...THANKS EPA!

I have to agree with you on that, the old Diesel were bad, current years seem pretty clean. I had a Turbo Gas 1.7 in a 2007 Passat. That car was fast.

I just read the EPA Notice of Violation to VW.

Its not a question that VW could not make these engines meet the requirements for an EPA certificate of compliance - they can and do but only under specific circumstances. Its just that they could not do so while also meeting the engine performance specs which they were using to attract consumers and take huge market share from other manufacturers.

The way they did it was to program the ECC with a 'switch' (what the EPA calls a 'defeat device') that shut off the emissions controls without valid reasons for doing so. The 'switch' was activated by the car detecting when it was being run on a dynamometer (which they say used inputs such as steering wheel position, vehicle speed, run time and barometric pressure) and used an engine/exhaust map vastly different from the non-dyno ('road') map.

Its not the EPA that screwed you, its VW for choosing not to play by the rules. Probably took a lot of brainpower to devise that 'switch'.

I'll tell ya, I can tell when I'm behind a VW diesel by the smell. No Joke. I''d take a bet that my 2011 Ford is cleaner than your TDI. When you start dumping DEF into your TDI and seeing that "Cleaning the Particle Separator" message, you can brag about how clean your vehicle is. Not knocking your choice of vehicles but this news does not surprise me. And yes, You have a right to complain.

I believe its the generation of TDI that didn't use DEF (may or may not have had a particulate filter but that doesn't do anything for NOx, just soot) that is at issue. VW didn't want to go to the expense of adding a catalytic converter and DEF system and chose to play games in the software instead. Looks like with the newer generation they given in and are using a system VW calls Adblue (a European name for DEF to scare you into buying overpriced bottles from VW dealers).

I find it humorous that after all the chatter over the years about "Why can't American manufactures make a clean diesel car like VW?" that VW wasn't clean to begin with...

While VW definitely has shown ingenuity they've also shown they lack any integrity.

One thing about the EGR, also, is how damaging it is to the engine just to lower the NOx levels.
