Are you a cook or a chef?

I was listening to the radio this morning on the way to work. This station every morning calls up the owner of a food catering place that also sells plate lunches. The DJ's converse with him and then he tells the lunch special for that day.

Anyhow, today the owner said something pretty funny that I thought ya might get a kick out of.

The DJ called the owner a chef, and the owner quickly corrected him and said that he was a cook, not a chef. He also added that everything he knew about food was self taught, and that made him a cook.

He then asked the DJ's if they knew the difference between a cook and a chef.

When they said they didn't...he told them that a cook knows what he is doing, and a chef thinks he does.

So which are you?

I am neither. I know I don't know what I'm doing and don't even think I do.

I'm cook.
If I ever tried to make a quiche it would wind up scrambled eggs. I am just happy to get things that on the table still hot.

Based on the definition from your story, a cook is self taught. The only kitchen training I ever had was how to use fire extinguisher. Since the smoke alarm means dinner is ready, the training was worth it.

I am the blacksmith, everything I cook comes out black and hammered.

I also remove the battery from the smoke alarm while cooking.

Depends on if I'm indoors or out.

Indoors I am a cook. The whole family agrees my scrambled eggs can't be beat. But that's about it.

Outdoors, since I like to watch that "Barbecue U" show and even have one of their books, I am the "Grill Master"

I know how to make a peanut butter sandwich, and I think I can open a can of soup. What does that make me?

I am neither, I burn water.

The question rings true tho across many careers, in the aircraft biz it is a similar question, "The difference between an aircraft technician and an aircraft mechanic, technicians take it apart, mechanics put it back together"

My Father was a trained Chef, he moved to New York from Italy when he was 16, started cooking there, then moved to England where he received his formal training. He had cooked for everyone from the royal family in the UK, to a certain (interesting) segment of the Italian culture in Montreal, to 5000+ forestry workers at conventions in Prince George, BC. He took the "Chef" moniker pretty seriously, and without doubt paid the dues to be called Chef. His career moved us around Canada from Montreal to the cost of Vancouver Island, and everywhere in between.
It seems that these days anyone with a trendy little coffee shop, a panini press, and close proximity to an embroidery outfit is calling themselves a "chef".

I've learned a ton from my Dad, along with spending a few years cooking myself, and while I can hold my own pretty well, do the majority of the cooking at home....I'd never, ever either call myself or consider myself a "Chef".
