I don't know they're only head shots.

Maybe its the lack of sleep or the lack of coffee but, I think I had better stop while I'm a head, before this gets moved to a different website.

Question - do the moderators see/view every post before it is seen by us or do you have to periodically review them?

Excellent question.

If you look to the right of the browser screen you will see a list of usernames of "non guest" forum members who are logged on. Anyone in bold is either a moderator or an admin. Many times there are neither online.

You folks "run" the forum.
You get the forum you want.

Most of you want a nice SANE place to come and hang out; talk about camping; review cool stuff they found; provide help or get help with troublesome camper problems.

What most do NOT want is hurtful speech, politics, rants with no possible resolution, pornography, spam, or proselytizing. RESPECT breeds respect and the forum staff are the gatekeepers to keep a lid on stuff. We have tools to fix most things that go wrong and can edit out violations that creep in.

MOST violations of forum rules come from members who use the "report post" icon to let us know there is a problem. It is just impossible to see every post in every thread in every forum. We do have lives (believe it or not - the DW is waiting for me to finish this so we can go food shopping) and we are all unpaid volunteers.

The Moderators discuss the reported post and if action is required we take it. We have over 26,000 usernames in the database. It is quite impossible to keep track of "bad apples" without some kind of Talley system. So we have warnings and strikes. Most times a simple reminder is all that is required (I get reminded all the time because I too can get carried away with a thread). If warnings don't work or a member "pops off" we can give a strike that stays on the record for several months (some can be made to never go away). We use a 3 strike system, and then discuss banning if that person just can't live by the rules.

The decision to ban is not taken lightly. It is made by at least an admin and 2 Moderators (though nearly all have been unanimous) and is normally final.

Closing a thread can happen when, in the opinion of any Moderator, that the discussions have skated too close to the edge. Take it as it is intended. No one wants to be the "bad guy", but closing a thread is a lot less intrusive than corrective action. If you feel you were treated capriciously, you can PM any Moderator and ask for the thread to be reviewed.
