I went to a bar and ordered a bottle of beer. As the bartender put my drink down, I asked him for the wifi code.

"Oh no" he said, "No wifi in here, people used to sit talking in here, about their day, their families, work, politics, music, the lot. Now people just stare at their phones and it breaks my heart to see. Therefore, no wifi in this place."

"You know what?" I replied, "You're right" and I put my phone away.

"Thank you", the bartender said "In this bar I want you to act as you would thirty or forty years ago".

So I lit a cigarette, gave him .75 cents for the beer and said "no problem buddy."

HangDiver, your story reminds me of a little diner along I-70 in central Missouri. I'd stop there once in a while on my way to or from college -- more years ago than I care to recall, but certainly before anyone had heard of the internet.

On the wall behind the counter, in beautifully stenciled letters, it said, "YCHJCYAQFTJB." Those curious enough to ask, including me on one my first stops, quickly learned that it meant, "Your Curiosity Has Just Cost You A Quarter For The Juke Box."

A quarter for the juke box? Now that's funny.... It's close to a dollar for a song now.

I told you it was more years ago than I care to recall. In fact, I have a pretty significant college graduation anniversary coming up in just a couple of years. The good thing about reunions is that, having graduated at 20 (and actually finishing a semester earlier), I always get to know that I'm the youngest guy in the room.

My mom used to say that reunions were the the most dire game of musical chairs ever invented.

The last one to show up wins.

If my class was to have a reunion it could be held in the corner booth at Denney's. Class was small to begin with and as the years passed the survivors became fewer.

I think the person that called them "Umbrellas" meant to call them Brellas, but they had a moment of hesitation beforehand.
