Funny Money

True story.
Today at Wendy's drive up window my tab was $3.58
I handed the gal a $2 bill, a gold color dollar coin, a Kennedy half dollar and a lowly dime.
Her expression was priceless and her comment can't be posted in a family friendly forum.
Her boss saw what was going on and started laughing.
I paused long enough to see we were all good and drove off with my burger.
I'm pretty sure she'd never seen a half dollar coin before.

I’m pretty sure the only thing she had ever seen was the dime!

I have some fun doing the same. All the newer dollar coins cause issues. The clerks almost always think the Susan Bs are quarters and wait for the rest of the money until I show them what they are......... They think the gold dollars are play money.

I did have a post office refuse to take them.

the almost un-believable part is ONLY $3.58?

I got two single Wendy burgers today and it ONLY cost $9.09

There was a time in my life when you coud get a bag full of burgers for $3

Of course that represented 2 hour's pay on my job back then.

I quit "eating out". Got too expensive and even my cooking is healthier.

Up until the late 60's two cheesburgers, two small fries and a large drink cost 97 cents at the clown's burger place... a nice meal for me at the time when I was making about $3/hr

I wish the feds would kill the penny and pick a dollar coin to standardize on. It would save us, as taxpayers, a lot, and there would still be 4 coins in common circulation to match the 4 coin bins in most cash registers.

Coin vending machines can be adjusted. Electronic and credit card payments are common, anyway.

She might not have seen a $2 dollar bill before either. Maybe not even a Sacagawea dollar. Also, the Presidential dollar coins are not common in some places.

I had a post office in Missouri by the Arch that tried not to take them and they were from the change we received from when we paid to ride the Metro from the campground to the Arch.

Couple months ago I stopped at B.K. on the way home from work. Went drive thru, order was $8.45 or something close. Gave the gal at window a $20. Got food, drink, change....stuck change in shirt pocket and drove home. Pulled change out of pocket and found the $11.55 in change...plus the original $20 I gave the cashier. They paid me $31.55 to eat a Whopper and Fries.

This math teacher has to reply. It’s in my DNA. I can’t help myself.

Instead of being down $8.45, you are up $11.55. That is $20 to the good, the twenty that they accidentally gave you back.

Another way to look at it: You have $11.55 that you did not have before buying the meal plus the meal, valued at $8.45, for a total of $20.

Yet another way to look at it: They gave you $11.55 and a meal, and took nothing from you. Therefore, they paid you $11.45 to eat the $8.45 meal, a total of $20.

In any of the above cases, you owe that BK $20. Don’t let karma collect it from you.

When I was stationed in Germany we had a bunch of two dollar bills dumped on us. They spent well but are certainly worth a lot less today.

Getting rid of the gold coin was a mistake. It was 'worth a pretty penny'.

I have not used anything but plastic since Covid struck, don't want to touch money. About the only thing we used cash for prior to that was convenience stores.

It's amazing how younger generations have never seen certain types of US money that every now and then is applied for purchases.

>found the $11.55 in change...plus the original $20 I gave the cashier.<
At the end of the shift the till is counted.
She probably got a warning for being short.
One of my 1st regular (as in every day) jobs was a fast food joint called Sandy's.
It turned into Hardy's later on.
And
a Jr. Bacon cheese burger and tiny fries is $3.58 with tax.
I told her to keep the change.
Honestly- I got a pack of 100 $2 bills from the bank a couple weeks ago just for spending on tips and fast food. They were brand new- sequential serial numbers.
It almost always gets a reaction.
If I'd thought of it sooner, I'd have given the girl at the window a $2 bill extra.
I get rolls of dollar coins at the bank but had to order the pack of 2s. They had them in a couple days.
It's odd that your PO balked at taking dollar coins. Our PO stamp machine gives them as change.

I was going to say the same thing. If there's one place I can count on getting dollar coins as change, it's the post office stamp vending machine.

Of course I haven't actually been there to get stamps in probably 10+ years because I never mail anything anymore.

My wife worked at a BK for her first job in the mid 90's. Their policy at the time was that when they first started working the register they were not allowed to let the machine tell them how much change to give back. They were required to calculate it and count it back manually.

She still works retail today and says that 99.99% of the time her register balances exactly at the end of her shift.

It's a shame businesses don't still do this. I've had cashiers literally refuse to take extra change from me if they've "already pushed the buttons on the register."

Our local post office took out their vending machines several years back. You have to go during business hours or are out of luck .

We had one of those two dollar bill stories not too long ago where the business didn't know there was such. Cops got called.
