I read an article several months ago about bacteria. Your shoes, especially tennis shoes and sandals have 10 times more bacteria on them than coins.

I can't tell you the number of times I've seen folks at the dump stations wearing sandals.

they don't make money until you get a dime.

Dropping pennies would cause a lot of political backlash. Dropping nickels may be insurmountable.

Many vending machines already take $1 coins. I use $1 coins in Coke machines or snack machines all the time. The $1 coins minted after the IKE dollar coins are already all the same size.

The penny's have not been copper in years......

I have returned more incorrectly returned change than any person should have to. Sometimes it is met with astonishment that you would return it and other times they are gracious. But more than once they have said they didn’t want it back. One place said well the drawer balanced so I was wrong ($20). And another said they couldn’t open the drawer to put it back in ($5).

Mark Dice did an experiment awhile ago where he had 1/10th oz gold coins in a plastic baggie in one hand and a box of Snickers in the other.

IDK if he edited it out but no one took a gold coin. Currently gold is trading for a bit more than $1900/oz.

Not legally. Banks routinely (when they know of a mistake) collect the money back any way that they can. That $20 belongs to BK, not to the customer.

My wife tells the story of a member who had a couple of grand erroneously credited to their account. They withdrew all the money. The credit union discovered the mistake, and took the money out, sending the account into the negative. Ultimately, the member took out a loan to make things right.

I was active duty USN stationed in Hawaii. I used Bank of Hawaii as there were convenient locations to me and on base. I deposited a government check in person, something along the lines of $1,150. Well I did my business and got my stub and went to my truck. Well they deposited $11,500,000 into my account. I hit the ATM and took $20 and got the balance on the ATM receipt. It was in the neighborhood of $11,525,000. They didn't honor that number. Lol I went in the next day and spoke to the manager and got it corrected. I couldn't afford the taxes on that number.

I actually had a Wendy's threaten call the police when I used a $2 and a dollar coin. I told them go a head, I'll wait, but the Secret Service deals with counterfeit money. They just stood there with a stupid look on their faces. An older guy behind me paid for my meal for the 2 and coin. Still waiting for the police lol

The younger generation proves over and over they don't know how to give change on purchases. Giving the correct change should be an employer's test before hiring....and if the employee is repeatedly losing company money, they should be fired. Business is not in the business to lose money.

In 1986 the United Kingdom came out with £2 coins. I picked up a roll of them at the bank the day before they were put in use. I used them the next day at the Airport when I was shipping out and boy were people confused. When I got stationed back in the UK in 1990, you couldn't find the £2 coins, they were now collectable and worth more than face value. Sure wish I had kept them rolls, I still have one coin left. Another story. Last year when we went to Niagara Falls and then Canada, we were at a camp ground on the US side. The vending machines would not take Canadian quarters but the change machine gave Canadian quarters. Go figure. Ron

Okay, just one more. I started collecting coins in 1962, pennies, nickles, dimes and quarters. After a short time, I realized I could only afford to save the pennies and dimes. Still have all the pennies One day I needed some money so I took the dimes, 30 Mercury Head, and spent them. It was years before I ever saw one in circulation again. About 5 years ago my wife came out of a store and said look here. She had some Mercury Head dimes. I went back in and got the rest that the cashier had. All different dates, somebody must have gotten hold of someones collection.

Around 2000, wheat pennies started showing up around here in circulation. I was working at a parts store and I opened a roll that were nearly all wheat pennies. When cashing in rolled coins you have to put your phone number on them. I went to the bank where we got our change and asked for all the rolls of pennies with that phone number. Someone must have been saving his change because there were some newer '59 + pennies still shiny.
It wasn't til quite a while later that I said to myself, "Dummy, why didn't you ask for all the rolls of coins with that phone number?" From the time frame of the penny dates, if this person was saving all their change, how many silver coins did I miss out on? Lol. Live and learn, Ron

Getting rid of the gold coin was a mistake. It was 'worth a pretty penny'.
