If it was an open utility trailer, a piece of junk from the pile he was hauling slipped out and jammed the wheel? But a bad bearing is more likely.

He forgot to remove the security chain that he uses to keep people from stealing his trailer.

None of the above. It's kind of funny how it happened and not something you hear of much. Any more guesses.

He found it somewhere and thought it would make a good spare.

A separation and he ignored the "thump, thump, thump" for a couple thousand miles???
Not all tires "explode" when separated.

The recess of the rim was so deep that when it was mounted on the axle the tire jammed agains the side of the trailer preventing it from moving?

All good guesses, but not what happened in this instance. His trailer came disconnected from the ball, but remember it didn't have brakes and it only happened to this one tire.
I'm still kind of laughing how he told me it happened.

It was the spare mounted on the front?

Bingo. We have a winner. It was his spare and hung lower than the tongue thus was dragged on the road.

Wouldn't the tire count as a braking device

Just got in a pair of tires for a friend of mines side-by-side.
Evidently my ex wife is a model for tires now.
These do go good with Halloween approaching.

Just had a customer wanting a tire but mounted on a ten inch wide rim according to him. He was griping about another tire store telling him they couldn't mount the size tire he wanted on a ten inch wide rim. I told him the same but actually walked out and looked at his truck.
I saw right off his rims were a lot narrower than that and told him so. He wanted to argue the point so I got my rim calipers off the balancer and showed him his rims were 7.5 inches wide.
He bought the tire from us and while we were mounting it, he told us what he did for a living which is the humor part of this tale about width/measurements/etc......
Said he was a carpenter by trade.

In all fairness, he never said he was a GOOD carpenter, did he?

Well, you do know the definition of a 'good carpenter' don't you?
A GOOD CARPENTER IS ONE WHO KNOWS HOW TO HIDE THEIR MISTAKES.

On the other hand, a 2x4 isn't really two by four after finishing, so he probably figured he was close enough.
Years ago, Dad and Mom were having our unfinished basement divided into rooms. The two carpenters (just one Stooge short of a team) very carefully measured where one of the walls should be, then snapped a chalk line to be sure that everything was straight. They then started from opposite ends of the basement, each nailing his sections of the board for the wall footing on the right side of the line -- his own right side, of course, meaning that they didn't meet in the middle.
Dad was not please when the concrete floor, which had been beautifully smoothed and finished when poured, had holes and chips in it when one set of boards had to be removed for half the length of the basement.

Very true. Our house aphasia log beams. The walls have very specific notches for the logs to rsst in. When they were setting One log, the notch wasn't wide enough. Our builder was up there with a Sawsall making it fit. He turned to me and said "you didn't see this."

I helped my FIL with some remodeling quite a few years ago. Their house had been built with unfinished 2X4s which measured exactly that.
