It was winter time and the roads were icy. I was in a restaurant and asked how cold it was. Was told "around 40 degrees". I mentioned that the roads were covered with fresh ice and it should be a lot colder. Response "Water freezes at a higher temp here because of the altitude".

More modern education at play here.
Interestingly the opposite condition in fact is true. Water boils at a lower temperature the higher the altitude. Around 8,000 feet above sea level water boils at just under 200 degrees F.

Also interestingly, that is one reason why coffee on an airliner can taste different; they cannot raise the coffee water to the same temperature as you can at lower altitudes, usually 205 degrees, because the cabins are pressurized to around 7,000 feet above sea level.

The actual number is dependent on the aircraft itself and the actual operating altitude. It's known as "max diff" for the maximum differential pressure between the inside of the aircraft and the outside air and is a structural design limit.

When I worked in corporate aviation we had special coffee makers on the long-range jets that actually were slightly pressurized to raise the boiling point and thus the temperature of the water used to "cook" the grounds. Yeah, high-priced execs can be finicky...

Ouch! Not what you were expecting, I’m sure.

BTW I got a real chuckle out of the new sigline.

I tried to explain this fact to the person but it was clear I had engaged in a battle of wits with an unarmed person.

Next time I hit that town was about 40 years later and the laws of physics were still the same.

Water does freeze at higher temperatures at higher altitudes. I doubt that there is an 8-degree difference, though.

Bobby, in honor of your new tag line -- "I wonder what went off in Thomas Edison's head before he invented the light bulb." -- I'm sharing a piece with you from my collection of fine art.

You're welcome.

Correct about boiling water. If I recall, water boils at 202 F in Denver. My coffee was terrible!
However, water does actually freeze at a higher temperature at high altitude but it isn't enough to be hardly noticeable.

And Bobby, you should shop at that same store, same checkout, every day. Eventually, maybe the checkout guy will pay you to buy groceries there.

True but the word "negligible" is actually to large to describe the change.

Quote:
If you decrease the pressure, the freezing point of water will increase ever so slightly. From 0° C at 1 atm pressure it will increase up to 0.01° C at 0.006 atm.
The pressure at 10,000 feet for example is .69 atm. That's more than 115 times the above example which would result in a 115 times less change in temp.

As you said, an 8 degree difference? Not even with "New Math"

As most know water boils at a lower temp at altitude due to the lack of pressure on it's surface. It freezes merely because it get's cold.

Had a female customer just hit me.....but it was funny and not in a mean way

Her and her husband drove in to get a tire repaired. She is doing the pee dance and asks where the bathroom is. I explained to her that we currently have the water off, repairing a line....thus no bathroom.

She tells her husband she is going to have to go across the road to the convenience store. As I'm bending down to jack up their truck, she passed by and slaps at my shoulder to scold me for not having a working bathroom.

However she misjudged her swing and misses my shoulder but ends up hitting me under my ear on the neck.

I jerk back up, not sure what she just did, and immediately look at her husband. I'm sure I wasn't smiling. He saw what happened and had a look of horror on his face....maybe thinking he was going to receive a beatdown for her actions. She is apologizing and trying to explain what happened.

I did bust out laughing when her husband got behind her and said he would hold her arms while I hit her back.

Mondays at the tire shop

Put a quart of oil in a 5 gallon bucket Bobby!! Makes a great bathroom!! The oil will stay on top of any other solids and liquid. Thus the oil will keep any odors in the bucket.

Just a poor boy’s bathroom. Don’t ask me how I know this. But I do know of some farm shops that have them.

Interesting but after the bucket is full do they seal it or dump it?

Just spritz a little gasoline on the top and toss in a match.

For some reason I think if offered the bucket option she would still have opted for the convenience store across the street

Back in the 90's when we did a lot of chuck wagon racing and trail riding, we did a lot of camping out of our horse trailer. The first gooseneck, that I did my own living quarters in, had a cowboy (cold) shower in the horse stall and a folding commode lid (anchored to the wall) that sat down on a 5 gallon bucket that we kept trash bags in. When it got obnoxious, we would tie up the bag and toss it in the garbage. Wish I would have thought of the oil trick back then.

Just carry it out and dump it in the field. It pretty nasty but the oil keep the smell in the bucket.

I think that it might not be clear that you are probably talking about using vegetable oil, and not motor oil.

It was worse than foul and the smoke carried the odor a long way. Depending on the amount in the drum bottom used in latrines, it had to be "stirred" every once in awhile. When I was in Nam we used jet fuel (kerosene) to burn as hot and fast as possible. I can recall the smell to this day. Was worse than Nuoc Mam Cham sauce.
