Scary thing for me is when I was younger(stupid) we would change tires on the rims that had the retaining ring. People called them split rims but I guess they were not actually. While airing up we would put them under the old style hoist that cars drove up onto. You do not see them anymore.

One day one let loose and scared the sh*t out of me. Ramp save my life and after seeing videos of what a tire does to a cage I am extremely lucky. It was almost to full pressure as I was getting close to removing the air chuck.

I bet even 10 years later I would still get the willies just thinking about it. That was in the late 70's working at a full service gas station, part time while going to school.
Dave, back in early 70's high school, I was a tire buster for a logging truck company. ALL the rims were split rims. Had one end pop up, while I was on the X frame, while airing up the tire. I was launched about 15 feet.
Another guy in town was decapitated by a fractured split ring.

Only a minute or so elapsed and I saw her step back to the shop door asking if she should pull her car in the bay. I said in astonishment "You already went to your house and back?"

She looked at me and said "NO!!!."

I am confused somewhat and reminded her that she said she had left her money at home and was going to go get it.

This is when she said "Yeah I know, and after you put the tires on, I'm going to go get it"

I now told her that the tires had to be paid for first before I could mount them.

She started cussing, fussing, whining, and pining.

Eventually she told me she would never do business with me again.

Oh the things I wanted to say, but could did not. I simply told her to go get her money and we could get it done.

She told me she would not ever be back.....and even though I thought it, I didn't say "Don't do me any favors!". I just mumbled "Sorry".
Im not believing this one I think you just made it up so we could have our chuckle for the day. Later RJD

LOL, surely I could make up something better that would involve redneck space aliens abducting ex wives, talking nutria rats, and magic genies appearing out of old tires.

But as long as you are laughing, then I'm good with whatever.

Ok, in all seriousness. Should I pull this thing out of my truck tire or leave it in there? It's not losing air at this time.

Maybe it's not too deep?Click image for larger version

Wouldn't pull it out unless you are sitting at a repair facility in case it is all the way thru.

That is one of the reasons I avoid interstates if possible when on a two wheeler.
Happened to me back in 60's when I was in my MGA roadster, top down. Following a tanker carrying compressed gas and suddenly the same as F.R.O.G's happening --"Boom, cloud of dust, chunk of tire flying". Difference was a huge chunk went over my car and when tire blew it ripped air lines loose under trailer causing brakes to lock. Now add to the cloud of dust a thick cloud of tire smoke. Tire smoke smelled bad enough to cover any smell that might have suddenly been emitted from my car.

Not me, but a friend of mine. He was following an 18 wheeler when the entire back axle and tires departed the trailer. It bounce a couple of times including just in front of his car, went untouched over his car and creamed the car behind him. He never saw what happened to that car.

Do people still plug, I thought it was only patching now. Found a tire guy not to far from my campground in Massachusetts. Website says "patch/plug combination" that normal?

YES, that is how you want a tire repaired and is normal. That is the Rubber Manufacturers Associations (RMA) approved method which about all tire manufacturers are members of. It's also called a patch insert if a one piece unit (see pic above). This is how you repair tires so they do not separate. This combination repair unit is installed from INSIDE the tire after it is dismounted from the rim. The rubber plug fills the hole in the tire so water, dirt, and debris cannot get back into the belts, while the patch seals the tire from the inside so that air cannot escape or find it's way into the belts/plies and separate them. See this link from Cooper tire on this:

https://coopertire.com/CooperTire/me...n_108_0914.pdf

This should not be confused with a plug only repair, that is pushed into the tire from the outside, which is not how you want to ever fix a tire unless you are just in a desperate situation. If you do use a plug only inserted from outside the tire, you want to get to a tire shop quickly and have it repaired correctly. A plug only from outside the tire can void the warranty when a tire separates. See my previous thread here on why you don't want to use a tire plug only inserted from outside the tire.

If you can find one of those old split rims that hasn't been sent for scrap- the wheel does make a pretty good fire ring!

Why doesn't this tire shop open before they say they do, been waiting on the parking lot for 10 minutes. [emoji1787][emoji16][emoji3]. There are like 30 cars here, hope they aren't holdovers from yesterday.

If they pull the nail and it holds air, do we leave it alone?

I had one with a screw in the tire and went to local dealer and stood there while he took it out no leak I was good to go. It was in the tread part of the tire. Later RJD

Once they pull the nail and see how long it is- the answer will probably be more obvious.
Good Luck- I hope it's very short!!

I see what you are doing here. Lol

As Dan said, once they pull it, you will know more especially how deep it was into the plies.

They took it around back. Said they patched it, free tire repair, $13 tpms program or something. Either way, back on the road dragging the 5th wheel around. I forgot to ask to see the nail. Totally worth it.
