Up here you'll see the same car/tire setups in the state "welfare" office parking lots.
To some putting rims on their car is more important than putting food on table at home.

Several around here advertise six month same as cash financing....which the sell price is twice as much as a regular dealer. If you don't pay it off in six months it reverts to a 15-18 month payout....at anywhere between $20-50 per week.
They advertise the amount of your weekly payment ,not monthly or yearly...or total.
Take a calculator and multiply $20x 78 weeks. Multiply $50 x 78.

What gets me is the people spending close to $4K on tires are the people most likely unable to afford it. After 18 months the tires are probably shot because the cars they're mounted on are in such bad shape.

I hear you. They are also trapped in the cycle. Since they are rent to own, failure to pay results in them being repossessed. So when your vehicle is sitting on cinder blocks, which is what happens......you can't get to work or anywhere. You most certainly aren't in a financial position to go buy another set of tires, since you were buying these on the installment plan to start with.
So you have to pay your late fees, etc...and get the tires back, then continue to pay the higher prices. When they do wear out, you probably still haven't saved or been able to improve your financial situation due to the money you have lost on financing.. ....so you have to finance the next ones. You are stuck in the cycle.
But, nobody put a gun to your head. People do this voluntarily, and the are lining up to do this. Their target market is people who are bad at math, and/or fiscally irresponsible.

I've had that happen before with a customer. They bought a tire and then ran over a rr spike about a quarter mile away when crossing the tracks. It also went thru the tire and rim, like in the picture.
When they brought it back, they tried to argue that the tire already had the spike in it when we sold it to them.
That conversation got shut down fast by me.

When I was in college I purchase 4 new tires for my car. Drove 100 mile to school. On the way home next week got off the edge of road at railroad tracks. I hit the open rails sideways!!
Blew out both right side tires. Went back to buy two more tire. Filling station I bought them from said he could get them covered under a road hazard policy as I hit big chuckhole.
Now I didn’t tell him I hit a chuckhole nor did I tell him I didn’t. Lol. Got two new tires free !!

That's probably going to take two of these to fix it.

Wow. That's like take a used diaper back to Wal-Mart and saying it was that way when you pulled it out of the box.

... but I think we'd be surprised by what people will try along those lines - and with perfectly clear conscience.

What a time waster.

Since there are so many people who will vouch for him, maybe he should go and get $100 each from a dozen of them, and then bring you the cash. After all, they know he's good for it.

You might want to put up a sign that says.

Don't laugh too much about that spike. Hear in suburban Los Angeles, my wife ran over a screwdriver getting off the freeway - all on the pavement. The screwdriver penetrated the tire and the rim. Cost me about $125 for a used rim (for an '03 Tahoe) and I forget what the tire cost - might have been covered by the road hazard policy.

Had a woman in a Mercedes just pull up over the street curb in front of our shop, getting out of the way of a fire truck. She damaged her car a good bit, as she hit a storm drain too.
Now for the good part. She wants to know my insurance company because evidently I'm at fault for her stupidity, and also for the state highway department whose curb and drain she hit.
Told her that was on her, and her insurance would need to cover it.
She then says her husband is an attorney and he would sue me. I told her then her husband probably knew my attorney, and would understand the countersuit I would file.
She called the state police. I saw them pull up, look at her vehicle...then told her something very quickly that upset her. The trooper left without even looking my way or writing anything up. She pulled out right after him.
It's always fun.

Our crew was re-roofing and apartment building. Young kid comes flying in the driveway past all of our trucks. He gets out of his car and starts yelling he has a nail in his tire and we owe him a new tire. How did he know? He just got out of his car and started yelling, he never looked at the tire.
So the crew leader went and looked at the tire, sure enough there was a nail in it. A finishing nail, not a roofing nail. No hissing noise at all. So our guy pulled out his pliers, yanked out the nail (then the hissing started) and handed it to the kid. Our guy says "its a finishing nail and we are using roofing nails."
Kid tried to argue but he had nothing. Then he went into his unit.
The tire was flat when our crew arrived the next day.
