Had a customer today, who was either pinching pennies or that broke, as he wasn't using any common sense. He brings in four mounted tires/wheels (two trailer rims, two car rims) and wanted us to dismount all four, and put the two good car tire ones back on two of the trailer rims he had.
He's griping about price, and one time goes to load everything back up but decides to go ahead and pay the quoted price. I ask him if wants to put new valve stems in them for $1 a piece and he says NO. I look at one of the trailer tire/rims and it has a tire on it from the 1980's so I assume the stem is as dry rotted as the tire is. The other trailer tire on the trailer rim was shredded so I couldn't get a date from it, but even if it wasn't as old, it still had a blown out tire on it, and also needed a new valve stem. I explain all this to the guy, but he states again he is not going to pay the extra $2 and the old stems are fine. I just shake my head and swap the tires over knowing it's going to cost him more than a few bucks when the tires have to be broken back down to replace the stems.
It all reminds me of the movie "Better Off Dead" where the paperboy hounds John Cusack for $2.

False economy for sure. I don't have a problem at all with used tires, but valve stems? $1 each? Heck yea, I want new ones!

When I got to work this morning, there was a tire on an aluminum wheel leaned up against the first bay door. I rolled it inside and turned on the air compressor. I then locked back up and walked across the street to get breakfast
As I'm walking back across the road, I saw the vehicle this tire/wheel belonged to trying to turn in my driveway but had to wait for traffic. They saw me opening up but didn't know I had already been here a few minutes.
As they turned in, they could see their wheel was gone. They get out of the vehicle in a panic saying someone had stole their wheel they had by the door. It was a regular customer so I had a little fun with them.
I was telling them I couldn't believe they left an aluminum wheel out like that. He then started saying his wife was going to kill him as it was her car he was in.
I told him I had it inside the shop and had rolled it in before going across the road.
It was then he began breathing again and his color started returning to normal.

I don't know. I think he was so relieved he didn't balk at all when he had to purchase a new tire as this one was too damaged with a one inch cut. We didn't have the tire in stock and he ordered one for overnight delivery.

Ok that was a new one. Had a customer drive in on a four wheeler wanting to pay me to air up his left rear tire that was flat.
When I looked at it, you could see where the valve stem and parts of the rim were covered in expanding foam......which he had tried to insert thru the valve stem to hopefully seal up about a 1 inch cut in the tire.
He did manage to completely seal up his valve stem.....so no air could be inserted.

Had a female customer come in to buy a tire and she had two males with her. As I was installing the tire/wheel on her car I overheard one of the males saying he used to come here when he was kid and the other guy owned it.
The female corrected him and said it had the same owner and pointed to me. He then described a person who I used to look like.
I started laughing and asked him if he didn't recognize me as I got older and fatter. Without missing a beat, this guy points towards the other man and says "I knew who you were, but he didnt".
The look on the other guys face was priceless. I think we all laughed....except him.

Had a female customer today that needed a tire repaired. I'm guessing (and it's purely a guess) she was in her late forties in age. I asked her to back her vehicle in a bay as we are still trying not to get in customers vehicles due to Covid.
As I often times get, she started balking at having to back it in herself, and made a statement that her husband said she was terrible at backing up. I told her to roll her window down and I would walk beside her and tell her exactly how to turn and we would get her backed in the bay on the first attempt. I've done got old hat at this technique.
She got backed in perfectly, on the first try and I commented that we needed to tell her husband how good she had gotten at this....trying to compliment her. It was now that this story took a hilarious turn.
She looked at me and said "No, I could never tell him that."
I was puzzled at her comment, and before I could say anything, she added
that "she does a lot of things real bad on purpose, so her husband won't expect her to do them again."
I kinda chuckled at this and asked her if she was a 'bad" cook on purpose. She laughed and said "not really, but her husband thinks so." She then added "among other things" as she gave me a wink and kept laughing.
My mind is racing now at that last comment, and I just ended the conversation about her backing up skills with I wouldn't tell her husband...but I didn't say anything about telling the forums.

He should have taken a lesson from one of our New Mexico dealer's customer.
A Navaho woman came in for a tire rotation on her pickup truck. Dealer spotted a tire she had repaired herself. Had a cut in he sidewall, about 1-1/2 inch or so, that had been carefully stitched up using waxed twine and some beautiful needlework. A tube had been installed to hold air in. Dealer offered a new tire but at first she resisted. He told her that since it was one of "our brand tires" she would get a new one free (Free Road Hazard Warranty).
The stitched repair was so well done we kept the tire on display at the Home Office for years.
At least no foam to block valve stem

Hope this isn't how my Monday is going to go. I kept hearing noises in the shop. Each time I went to look I couldn't see anything.
As I was walking back to the customer area this last time, something hit me in the back of the head, knocking my hat off.
It's at that moment you go into flight or fight mode. It was also a second later I saw what was hitting me.....a sparrow.
It was in flight AND fight mode.
As it flew in for another strafing run, I was able to actually hit it, but not knock it down. It did however fly out the bay door.
So I guess it was a draw as to who won. We both got one hit in.

This is funny! I had to tell my wife about this. We are trying to keep a robin from building a nest in the eaves of our covered deck. We knock the material down as fast as they bring it in. At least they aren’t attacking us (not yet)!

I accused my wife of visiting your shop without telling me. I was sure that it was her doing the "backing up" story. But she doesn't even lie anymore about saying she is bad at doing something to get out of the task. She just fires herself if I make any negative comment.

It's definitely a Monday. Had a customer wanting a tire repaired. As he conversed he told me he had just attempted to plug it this morning at work but it was still leaking.
When I went to remove the wheel from the vehicle he had also forgot to tighten his lug nuts.
I removed the tire/wheel from the vehicle and could hear air hissing by the plug
I start telling him I wouldn't guarantee the repair after his further damage.
Here is where his mouth overloaded his brain. He said he understood and had bought the tires at wal mart who told him the same. He said since he didn't purchase road hazard that wally world declined on repairing the tire. This was a red flag to me.
When I removed the tire from the rim, it had about a half inch cut inside and about a quarter inch away from his self installed plug.
Told him that the tire had to be replaced. He asked how much and I gave him the price.
He says to go ahead and to send walmart the bill since he had road hazard. Yep he said that when he had just said prior he didn't have road hazard.
I tell him he has to take it back to Wal-Mart if he wants to try to get it road hazarded. He then starts trying to argue that road hazard is good anywhere and I can send them the bill to pay.
I tell him to pay me and he can send them the bill for reimbursement.
Now he just says to put it all back together and he would find somewhere else.
I'm thinking to myself two questions at this point. Do I really look that stupid and do I resemble my ex?
